Sri Sankalpa Kalpadruma - Nectar by Sri Visvanatha Chakravarti Tha

gauraprema - Tue, 11 Nov 2003 11:39:27 +0530
Dear devotees!

I just found my copy of Sri Sankalpa Kalpadruma - " The desire tree of sweet aspirations" by Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura and thought I would start posting it and sharing the nectar with everyone on this website.. Hope you enjoy this!
********************************************
PRARTHANA
Hey Vrndavanesvari Sri Radhe! You are the ocean of all beauty, compassion, romantic love, good qualities, good fortune, and pastimes of pleasure. Please listen to my prayer. I yearn to become Your maidservant and make You happy by serving You when You meet with Krsna. I have no other desire but this.

PRADOSHA LILA 8:24-10:48pm

After dressing and decorating You with various ornaments I will take You out on abhisara. When You first see Krsna from a dsitance You will become shy and try to return home. Firmly grasping the border of Your outer garment, I will pull You just in front of HAri. I will enjoy all Your scolding and abusive words for doing this as nectar pouring upon my head.
To pacify Your anger I will place my head at the feet of Your nagara and indicate that He should take You away. Then Krsna will firmly embrace You with His strong arms. Seeing Your body trembling with sattvika bhavas and Your hairs standing on end, the purpose of my having eyes will become successful.
Catching Your hand, Krsna will say, "Oh Pranapriya! Please come decorate this flower bed." Hearing this will fill my heart with boundless joy. You, however, will respond to Hari's advances in a faltering voice saying, "Hey Madhava! I am a chaste woman. Let Me go!" Coming to Your rescue, I will chastise Krsna for His aggressiveness.
Being a bama nayika (heroine who fights her hero). You will repel Krsna with Your arms and struggle for a moment when He tries to prevent You from fleeing by placing his hand on Your breast. Crying tears of happiness, You will become inundated in a cascade of ecstasy. Your long curly hair hanging to Your thighs will loosen and Your garments will slacken. Seeing this will make my life fortunate.

NISA LILA 10:48pm - 3:36am

Then You will lie down on an artistically decorated flower bed previously prepared by me. Repeatedly You will tell Madhava, "No! No! No!" Diving in the ovean of His unlimited pastimes, Krsna will ignore Your reproaches and taste the supreme happiness of making love to You. The purpose of my eyes will again become successful by gazing into the kunja to watch Your sweeter than sweet confidential pastimes. As You enjoy Your love play, I shall stand outside pulling on the ropes of the ceiling fan to mitigate Your fatigue and perspiration. Hearing the sweet cooing sounds that You are both making to each other will bring a slight smile to my face.
Then Rupa-manjari will arrive with a few sakhis and say, "Let go of the rope and pick some flowers." Bowing my head, I will enthusiastically do that seva without being the least bit unhappy over losing the pleasure of seeing Your nikunja lila with Your Priyatama. By following Rupa-manjari's order, I will remain the object of affection and grace from Tulasi manjari (my guru sakhi). For this reason, I will happily execute the order of Rupa-manjari.
Then I will make flower garlands, polish Your jewellery, grind camphor and kunkuma, prepare a brush for painting designs on Your body, and prepare pan from cloves, betel nuts and other items. After Cupid's battle, Rupa-manjari, Ranga-manjari, Tulasi-manjari and Rati-manjari will enter the kunja to dress You as You were before. They will motion to me to quickly bring the garlands and other articles I made for you. Hey Vrndavanesvari! Seeing You gorgeously dressed in fresh clothes and ornaments, Krsna will become eager to enjoy again. When He attempts to touch You, I will raise my eyebrows with great pride and severely chastise Him with loud shouts.
Lalita-sakhi suddenly arrives with the intention of catching You off guard and making some jokes about Your love play. But due to the expert and quick dressing of Rupa-manjari and others, Lalita becomes surprised to see You decorated as beautifully as You were before You met KRsna. Lalita mistakenly thinks that You did not enjoy intimately with Syama.
Taking this opportunity to bluff Lalita, Krsna points His finger at me and says, "Hey Lalita! I came here to remove the thorn of Radharani's chastity. But why is this maidservant interfering? This impudent manjari is trying very hard to ensure that Radhika does not enjoy with Me. Because of her efforts I cannot do anything!"
May the bumblebee of my heart constantly drink the nectar of these honey soaked words of Syamasundara!

Hey Pranesvari! When You leave the kunja Govinda will be embracing You with His left arm. As You talk with Your sakhis Your face will blossom with happiness as You gaze upon the beautiful scenery of Vrndavana forest. When You walk along the path I will walk behing You fanning You with a camara fan. Accompanying the other sakhis, I will also loudly sing Your wonderful glories.
Hey Swamini! I will throw flowers in front of You on the path that You are traversing to make it soft to the touch of Your feet and fragrant as well. Thus a rainfall of flowers will worship Your every step. After some time Krsna will sit down with You, and decorate You with different types of handmade flower ornaments, including a flower sash, crown, armlets, earrings and necklaces. At that time I will recite a flowery poem that I composed about KRsna decorating You with flowers, which will delight both You and all the sakhis.
In great happiness, You will commence Your rasa-lila on the banks of the Yamuna in a place where the rays of the silvery moonlight filter through the branches of the trees. Being attracted by the sweet fragrance of the flowers of the bending kadamba trees there, the bees will constantly sing Your glories. Expertly playing the vina, which I learned from You, I will accompany Your exquisite dancing.
Hey Vrndavanesvari! After the rasa-lila You and Your Pranavallabha will takerest in a kunja of newly bloomed malati flowers. At that time I will lovingly serve You freshly cut grapes, mangoes, bananas, pomegranates and various fruit drinks. Hey Radhe! I will lay You and Priyatama to rest on a luxuriant love bed of lotus flower petals artistically arranged by my guru devi, Sri Tulasi-manjari. With a slight smile on my face, I will gladly offer fresh pan to You and Your beloved.
Hey Pranesvari! I will massage Your feet by touching them with my long hair braid and anoint them with kunkuma powder. I will gaze on their delicate beauty with my eyes, and smell the wonderful ocean of their fragrance. I will embrace Your lotus feet to my breasts. Then after looking to see that no one is watching, I will affectionately kiss them with my lips.

NISANTA LILA 3:36AM - 6AM.

Hey Radhe! At the end of the night, Your earrings, necklaces, and nose pearl will be hopelessly entangled in the disheveled hair of You and Your lover. Seeing this, I will awaken my dearest sakhis (disciples of Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura) and bring them to Your kunja. Then my dearest sakhis will untangle You from Krsna. Absorbed in the ocean of Your blissful service, these sakhis will receive Your full mercy.
However, the sound of their ankle bells will awaken You from sleep. Looking about anxiously, You will feel slightly embarassed and try to sit up. At that time I will attentively worship You.
Hey Swamini! Seeing the priya-sakhis, You will feel slightly apprehensive and try to sit up. But due to being entangled with Your lover, You are not able to. Manifesting supreme dexterity, I will instantly loosen all the knots beginning with Your nose ring. I will also unsnarl the strands of Krsna's hair from You earrings and untangle Your golden necklace from His.
Hey Devi! One strand of Your hair is more dear to me than millions of my lives. Bearing this in mind, I will be especially careful not to cause You any discomfort while untangling Your hair. Hey Vrndavanesvari! When You leave the kunja and proceed home, I will give up Your association in order to secretly follow Krsna.
When Krsna arrives in Candravali's camp He will find her in a khandita condition (angry with Him for having been stood up). Before Krsna makes up with her, I will boldly describe all of the pastimes that Krsna just enjoyed with You.

PRATAH LILA 6 - 8:24AM

When You wake up in Yavat in the morning I will wash Your face with flower scented water, brush Your teeth with a mango twig, and clean Your tongue with a golden tongue scraper. After freshening up Your face with a damp cloth, I will hold a polished mirror before You.
Hey Devi! Removing You ornaments, I will dress You in a thin white bathing outfit. I will rub Your body with a cooling, scented red oil, and remove it with a paste produced from fresh kunkuma powder, camphor and other unguents. I will bathe You with flower scented water, and dry Your body with a soft blue towel.
I will make Your hair more fragrant, and carefully dry it by using smoke from burning aguru crystals. Taking a golden comb, I will comb Your hair, braid it with various jewels and flowers, and hang a jewled whisk at the end. Then I will dress You in the outfit of Your choice.
Hey Devi! I will place a crown of sapphires upon Your head. I will set strings of pearls just above Your forehead along Your hairline. I will decorate Your forehead with tilaka and different designs, and apply kajjala around Your eyes. I will adorn Your ears with jeweled earrings, and hang a beautiful pearl under Your nose.
Hey Vrajasundari! I will paint makaris (female dolphins) on Your cheeks, a dot of kasturi on Your chin, and other designs on Your breasts. I will attach a special nava ratna (nine planetary gem stones) armlet on Your arm and blue sapphire bangles on Your wrists.
Hey Radhe! I will cover Your hands with golden chains that attach to Your finger rings. I will hang a special locket around Your neck, and cover Your breasts with a pearl embroidered blouse. I will grace Your neck with a jeweled necklace and a fresh flower garland.
Hey Devi! When I have accumulated heaps of pious acts I will be able to hang a golden chain of small tinkling bells (kinkini mala around Your broad hips. The ankle bells I affix to Your lotus feet will attach to tinkling toe rings via delicate golden chains. Even though the bottom of Your lotus feet are naturally red, I make them even redder by applying a mixture of red lac. To further enhance the sweetness of Your naturally sweet smelling body, I will anoint You with fresh kunkuma. I will place a blue toy lotus flower in Your right hand. Finally I will hold a jeweled mirror in front of You. Seeing Your matchless beauty, You will become anxious to offer Your all-attractive form to the restless bumble bee eyes of Madhusudana. With my eyes filled with tears of joy I will offer my life force to You millions of times over in an arati performed with a camphor lamp.
gauraprema - Mon, 17 Nov 2003 21:30:35 +0530

Hey Devi! At sunrise You will go to Nandagrama to cook for Krsna as per the request of Mother YAsoda. While proceeding to Krsna's home, You will be surrounded by Kundalata and Your dearest sakhis. I will follow behind You carrying a container of fresh pan, and happily fan You with a camara having a jewelled handle.
Upon arriving at Nanda Bhavan, You will offer obeisances to Mother Yasoda. Wetting Your body with her tears, Yasoda will smell Your hear and inquire about Your well-being. Noticing Your shyness over this, I will also offer my obeisances to the feet of Mother YAsoda.
Then Mother Yasoda will say, "Oh beautiful Radhe! You are the embodiment of tapasya for Your dynasty. Your daily visits to my home bring all good fortunte because You have recieved a special boon from Durvasa Muni. Whatever food You cook will increase the duration of life of whoever eats it, and it will taste like heavenly nectar." I will smile upon hearing Mother Yasoda's words.
Hey Pranesvari! During this time Krsna is being bathed dressed and decorated by His servants in another part of the house. Understanding Your eagerness to see Him, I will take You to a place where You can see Him without being noticed by others.
Next I will wash Your feet and remove the ornaments and necklaces from Your body which might disturb Your cooking. Remembering my cleverness in arranging Your darsana of Krsna, You will happily say to me, "Hey kinkari! Take these ornaments. They are yours!" HEaring Your words my face will expand with joy like a madhavi lata blossoming in spring.
After You have cooked different types of preparations such as dal, spinach, sweet rice, and fried items that defeat the taste of nectar, Mother YAsoda will ask You to serve these items to Krsna. But You will adamantly refuse saying, "No! No! No!" When will I see You in this dilemma?
Hey Devi! As You look through the lattice window of the kitchen to observe Krsna eating to His full satisfaction, Your body will exhibit a splendid effulgence caused by the arrows of Cupid. May my mind always bathe in the ecstasy of seeing this.
Then Mother Yasoda will say, " Hey RAdhe! Oh my child! Oh auspicious one! This house if Your house. How can I consider You different from my own family members? Now please take Your meal in front of me." Hearing these words from VRajesvari, a pure sweet smile will become visible on Your face. I pray that this smile will forever remain fresh in my mind.

PURVAHNA LILA 8:24am - 10:48am

In the mid-morning, Your Pranavallabha and His cowherd boyfriends will leave home to graze the cows in the forest. Yasoda and Nanda Maharaja will follow Krsna for sometime crying loudly at the impending separation from their darling. After beholding Krsna's departure, You will return to Jatila's (Radha's mother in law) home in Yavat. On the pretext of performing Surya Puja, You will go to the forest and I will follow behind You.

In this verse 37, this pun is not translated and also not explained: nairujya-dAsy amRta pANir abhUr varANgi – Mother Yashoda says to Radhika”………by the blessing of Durvasa Muni You have become the Nectar-Handed One. Your cooking bestows freedom from disease (nairujya) to my son. Commentator Krishna Deva Sarbabhauma writes: nairujyadA arogya-Da tvam asi…..aham nirujya padena shlishtArtha smaranAt hasAni “You are the bestower of freedom from disease……when I remember the pun in this word nairujya I will laugh.” Krishna becomes free from the heart’s disease of lust by the touch of Radhika’s nectar-hands…..

Hey Devi! As You look through the lattice window of the kitchen to observe Krsna eating to His full satisfaction, Your body will exhibit a splendid effulgence caused by the arrows of Cupid. May my mind always bathe in the ecstasy of seeing this.

In this verse 41, the translation should be: “I will then immerse my mind in the vision of the waves of Your luster that is caused by erotic ecstasy as You look through the window of the kitchen, admiring Krishna’s bodily luster, as He is satisfied with His meal. This instantly delights You.”

MADHYANA LILA 10:48 - 3:36PM.

Entering the forest, You will see Krsna at a distance and start picking flowers. Walking behind You, I will collect all the flowers in a basket. Krsna will approach You and say, " WHo is this thief?" " Nobody!" You will reply. I pray that I can always remember You as You offer Your amorous eyes to Krsna at this moment. Turning His attention to me, KRsna will say, "Hey thief! How many flowers have you stolen? Let me see." I will respond by hiding the flower basket behind my back. But Krsna will try to snatch the basket from my hands.
Becoming unhappy with Krsna's advances, I will scream, " Hey Devi! Please protect You surrendered maidservant." In this way I will beg for Your shelter. Coming to my aid, You will say, " Hey dishonest cheater! Why are You troubling My manjari?" Then you will slap Krsna's arm and free me from His grip.
Forgetting about me, Krsna will forcefully tear You shield-like blouse, remove Your flower garland, and put it on his neck. With great arrogance He will proclaim, " Hey thief! Are all My flowers meant for Your garland? Now I must punish You by tightly clasping Your neck. Hey bold one! Let us meet Kandarpa Raja in a cave in this mountain. He will order Me to remove Your dress and happily present Me a pearl necklace to decorate My forehead." Inner meaning: ("I will take You into a cave to perform kandarpa keli, confidential pastimes.. At this time, Your perspiration will fall in such a way to appear like a row of pearls decorating My forehead.")
You will reply, "Hey Krsna! You may be the son of Vrajaraja, but since You have become the servant of that wicked Kandarpa Raja, Your intelligence has become polluted. It is not Your fault, however, but it is due to Your bad association. As far as what will decorate this chaste woman's forehead, that is known by the Creator."
Hey Devi! I will lovingly drink Your nectarean words to my full satisfaction. My eyes will drink the nectar of Your beauty and sweet pastimes with Your lover. I will satisfy the assembly of sakhis by giving this nectar to them.

This correction of the posting of November 14, 02.39 PM, was taken from another thread to keep all corrections together on the spot:

QUOTE

Seeing this, I will awaken my dearest sakhis (disciples of Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakura) and bring them to Your kunja. Then my dearest sakhis will untangle You from Krsna.

tatrAnayAni paramApta sakhI prabodhya (20)- Here Mahanidhi Swami and the original translator Gadadhara Prana das made two mistakes - 1. these sakhis are not disciples of Visvanath Cakravarti, because in the next verse (21) it is said tAbhyah prasAdam atulam sahasApnuvani - "I will thus receive great mercy from them", (tAbhyah) and not:

QUOTE

Absorbed in the ocean of Your blissful service, these sakhis will receive Your full mercy.

Mistake nr. 2 is tA darshayAni sukha sindhuSu majjayAni (20):
"I show this to the priya sakhIs and thus immerse them in oceans of bliss." Instead of:

QUOTE

Absorbed in the ocean of Your blissful service, these sakhis will receive Your full mercy.

Next:

QUOTE

Hey Swamini! Seeing the priya-sakhis, You will feel slightly apprehensive and try to sit up.

Why would Swamini feel apprehensive in front of visvanatha's disciples and not in front of binod ballari manjari (Visvanatha) herself?
She does feel apprehensive, but these sakhis are not disciples of visvanatha but sambhogecchAtmikA nAyikAs, superiors.

In verse 22 visvanath describes how he/she loosens all the knots

udgranthayAnyalaka kundala mAlya muktA

Whereas Mahanidhi/Gadadhara say that the sakhis already did this (which did not happen yet) in verse 20 (and which is nowhere mentioned in that verse). Why this would be done twice, first by the sakhis and then by Visvanatha/Binod again?

QUOTE
At this time, Your perspiration will fall in such a way to appear like a row of pearls decorating My forehead.")

The translator here hints at viparita vilasa (reverse pastimes), wherein Sri Radha takes the upper position, so that Her sweatdrops fall on Krishna, but the tikakara does not give any other special meaning to it than that the pearls (sweatdrops) appear on Krishna's own forehead due to the exertion of love making.

QUOTE
As far as what will decorate this chaste woman's forehead, that is known by the Creator."

"It is written on my forehead" is a Vedic metaphor for: "It is my Fate". Radha says: "Anyway, what to do? This is written on My forehead - it's my Fate."

QUOTE
My eyes will drink the nectar of Your beauty and sweet pastimes with Your lover. I will satisfy the assembly of sakhis by giving this nectar to them.

Tikakara Krishnadeva Sarvabhauma says: madiya karnabhyam udara puram.......atha iksanabhyam netrabhyam yuvayo rupamritam kanta sahityena tava vilasa rupa madhu ca he devi aham vitarani dadani. atha madhupana dvara netra dwayam madayani harshayani : "I fill the belly of my ears (!) with the nectar of Your words and I give ecstasy to my eyes by distributing the nectar of Your pastimes to them." There are no sakhis mentioned either in the sloka nor in the tika.......

Hey Radhe! Later at Radhua-kunda, You and Your beloved will sit together on a colorfully designed, flower decorated swing. I will push the swing and toss fragrant flower pollen over Your heads. Then I will sing Your glories and enchant You by playing the vina.
Oh Radhe! After the swing pastimes You will enter the Yogapitha Mandir. As You and Govinda sit upon a jeweled simhasana at the base of a desire tree, I will worship You with padya, arghya, incense, camphor, a ghree lamp, four types of bhoga, ornaments and garlands.
Hey Devi! At Govardhana You will enter the VAsanta Forest (spring season forest) to play Holi (throwing colored liquids and powders). To defeat Krsna in the battle of Holi You will discard Your shyness and assemble hundreds of sakhi soldiers. I will supply You with ammunition produced from the juice of fragrant flowers.
Krsna will challenge You to fight by shouting, "Hey Radhe! I am standing here showing You My powerful chest. If You have any strength, then let Me see You smash My chest with Your flower bullets. If You possess any courage in Your heart, then open up Your bouse and bravely stand before Me."
You respond, " Hey Krsna! It is Your nature to show off and proudly boast. We have heard from Paurnamasi that in Your previous life You were known as "Ajita" (unconquerable). But this statement is complete false. My sakhis and manjaris have defeated You many times, but still You continue to boast and remain arrogant.
My body will horripilate with ecstasy upon hearing Your words. I will praise You as Your battle with KRsna progresses from hand to hand, mouth to mouth, nail to nail and finally tooth to tooth. Your ankle bells will jingle along like the sound of a dundubhi drum.
After the battle of Holi, You and the sakhis will take rest along with Krsna in a beautiful calley beside Govardhana Hill. I will collect a pot of honey wine from the vanadevis and give it to You. Drinking this honey nectar, You will become intoxicated and exclaim, " Hey! Why? Why? Why is the earth tur-tur-turning? Why are the trees sha-sha-shaking. I am af-af-afraid. How will I remain alive?" Then You will embrace Krsna round the neck for protection.
Krsna will turn to me and say, " Your Swamini is suffering from delirium and speaking nonsense. Please step outside for a moment so I can cure Her illness." TAsting these nectarean words, I will quickly leave. From a hidden place I will peek through the foliage to relise the sweet sight of Your intimate pastimes.
During the water pastimes at Radha-kunda, You will defeat Krsna by splashing water in HIs nose, eyes, ears and face. He will dive under water and behave just like an alligator. I will understand what He is doing to You at that time by seeing the expressions on Your lotus face.
After Your water sporting, I will collect my sakhis (disciples). and massage both of You with fragrant oil, bathe You with scented water, dress You attractively, serve You various delicious fruites, and lay You to rest on a flower bed in a cottage of jewels. While resting with Syama, You will quietly get up and play a trick on KRsna by hiding Yourself in a vetasi kunja nearby. When Krsna gets up and looks for You, I will smile and say, " Hey KRsna! Radhe is hiding in this vetasi kunja. Why are You looking here and there?" Knowing me to be partial to You, Krsna will not believe me and will look for You elsewhere.
Showing You Krsna's bewilderment, You will laugh heartily. When You look for Syama, I will say, " Hey Swamini! Hari is hiding in this kadamba kunja. Why look elsewhere? Believing my words, You will quickly find KRsna. In this way I will help You win the game of hide and seek.
