Why Sri Chaitanyadeva and Nityananda Prabhu had 2 wifes? Was poligamy permited at vaishnava tradition?

Polygamy wasn't uncommon back in their days.
However, unlike Nityananda, Caitanya married Vishnupriya only after the death of Laksmipriya.
