English translations of Vedic & Chaitanya Literat. - lose knowledge when reading English

Guest64128 - Wed, 04 Jun 2003 03:33:02 +0530
I read quite a bit of English translations of Vedic & Chaitanya literature because I don't know Sanskrit except some words of the language. I noticed that just reading one word of Sanskrit i attained more knowledge than reading an entire Vedic/Chaitanya book which was translated into English. It like losing some of my senses. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this too or anyone who previously did not know Sanskrit. Anyone know what is going on inside the head when this happens?

Some Sanskrit words really have no English equivalent. Various translators attempt to come as close as they can, but there are usually additional explanations required. Part of the reason is that certain concepts in Sanskrit literature do not exist outside the context of the culture and theology that gave birth to those works.

Good luck with your reading - and don't forget to enjoy and savor it.
