Krishna and Christ - same person?

Jay Radhe!

I heard that in some Indian families Jesus Christ images are put together with the Krishna images on a altar. So I would like to know a little more about this and if in the Gaudiya Vaishnavism this is happens too. I would like to known any relashionship btw them and the views of the Gaudiya Acharyas about Jesus Christ.

There is no harm in paying respects to Jesus Christ, however we do not equate the devotee (Jesus) with the Deity as the Father (Krishna).  From what I can glean, the acharyas' position on the Christian trinity is that the Father aspect is the Lord in all His various manifestations as Paramatma, Vishnu and Krishna in Goloka, that the Son aspect is the jagat guru as Jesus was and that the Holy Spirit aspect is the holy names.  I unfortunately do not have any specific references.  Perhaps Jagat can help us out with this topic.

There is always some danger in trying to compare two disparate traditions like Gaudiya Vaishnaism and Christianity.  You might find so many traits that seem to be identical, but that may not be the same at all.  It requires a very careful examination on both sides, rather than a superficial analysis, which can be totally misleading.

The name 'Christ' means the 'annointed one'. It was believed by Jews of the day that a savior would come to liberate them from Roman occupation and would inaugerate a Jewish kingdom of a golden age. Many of them believed that the world was coming to an end and that God would save the Jewish race from the evil of the Romans. Historically speaking, Jesus was their hope and after his death through crucifiction, their hopes were dashed. His followers went into hiding although the impressions of his teachings remained in them. It is said by historians that the followers who had lots of association with him did not equate him with being an incarnation of God of any sort. It was Paul, who was converted to Christian faith and who had no association with him, was the one responsible for propagating the concepts of a God/son theory and the crucifiction as a purification of the sins of man for those who would except him. He wanted to bring Romans to Christian faith. However, his early followers did not see eye to eye with these conceptions. The faith grew because people believed that he was going to come back again and free them from the evils of the world. However, as time went on the evils got worse.

The Virgin birth is another contraversy amongst Christians. So is that Jesus had a brother whose name is James. Another contravesy amongst historians is the position of Mary Magdeline (the former prostitute). Some propose that she was actually his wife, but in order to create a divinity out of Jesus it was said that he was celibate. There is even a contraversy that Barrabas, the person whom was set free instead of Jesus, did not really exist. The Romans wanted to get rid of Jesus because he was a threat to Roman control of Judea because they feared an uprising and that was the intent of crucifiction. Jews normally wouldn't condemn one to death for heresy (according to some historians).

The gist is that there is a lot of what has been passed down to us about Jesus from Christian tradition that may not be historically true. People tend to create divinities out of people, be they great souls of faith in God to crazy nuckleheads misleading people. This period of history is quite hazy and it doesn't pay trying to tie it in with a tradition that is more solidly situated in history and precepts.

There are certainly countless sages who preached the message of God throughout the ages, some of them with the direct empowerment of the Lord (saktyavesa-avatara), some being indirectly empowered (saktyavesa-vibhuti). Those who have began to traverse a particular path of spiritual life are naturally most concerned for the saints who are like-minded (sajatiya), having a similar disposition towards the Lord, possessing special affection towards Him which the aspirant feels particularly attractive. One should not make a kichari out of anything and everything. Spiritual life should be focused if one is to ascend to a realm beyond the world of our present experiences.
