Sethusamudram canal between India & Sri Lanka project - 'Disastrous consequences for marine and coastal ecosystems'

Maha Bhava - Tue, 22 Nov 2005 19:03:21 +0530

Campaigners expressed fear that the proposed Sethusamudram canal between India and Sri Lanka could have huge environmental implications for both countries.
Environmentalists, lawyers and specialists from both countries warned that the proposed canal could have disastrous consequences for marine and coastal ecosystems.

They said the plans to dig the canal off Palk Strait will destroy the marine life in India’s southern tip and Sri Lanka’s north-western coast including Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.

But the Indian government is determined to go ahead with the project.

Sri Lanka's Foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has said the government is willing to solve the issue by further negotiations.
