Ekadasi vrata - Which day?

jagannathdas - Thu, 03 Oct 2002 00:33:58 +0530
Following the calendar, I'm a bit confused which day the fast should be performed for London. Is it safe to take the same time for Vrindavan here? ISKCON'S Vrindavan calendar shows Mahadwadasi fasting for 3rd October, which I intend to follow, but it feels like I'm taking pot luck! Working it out from the last full moon this seems to be the correct day to fast here, assuming that it is correct to fast on the dwadasi. :eh:

No, London is nowhere near Vrindavan. Take the closest location when your town is not available.

The default calendar is calculated according to London with BBT's VCal 4.01. It has the following entry for October 2nd:

2 Oct 2002 We  Suddha Ekadasi                    K Siddha    Pusyami         *
                Fasting for Indira Ekadasi

Which calendar are you looking at?

I'm reffering to raganuga.com's calendar. As you mentioned ekadasi was October 2nd, although I understand that fasting would be on the 3rd being Mahadwadasi. Is it Mahadwadasi in Vrndavan but not in London? This confused me as to which day to fast.

What counts in the calendar is the notes inside the table where you have the tithi and the rest. They apply for all locations unless otherwise mentioned. If there are exceptions, you will find them listed after the table.

Today is a regular Dvadasi in London. Here in Helsinki it is Suddha Ekadasi. In Vrindavana, Navadvipa and Sydney it is Maha-Dvadasi.

It is not  that each of the year's 26 dvadasi-tithis is meant for fasting. There are 8 dvadasis that are called maha
dvadvasi. 1. unmilani 2. vanjuli 3. trisprsha 4. paksa vardhini 5. jaya 6. vijaya 7. jayanti 8. papanashini. Fasting on
these days is most auspicious, but it must be indicated by the Panjika [calendar].

Today it is Trisprisa Mahadvadasi in Navadvipa, Sydney and Vrindavana (and everywhere around the same area).
