Nishanta Lila Katha


These verses are spoken by the sArikA named maJjubhASiNI. She witnessd Radha and Krishna's entire nakta-lila, and while sitting in a golden cage she addresses Krishna thusly:

gokula-bandho! jaya rasa-sindho!
jAgRhi talpam tyaja zazi-kalpam |
prIty-anukUlaM zrIta-bhuja-mUlAM
bodhaya kAntAM rati-bhara-tAntAm ||GLA 1.23||


"O Friend of Gokula! Glory to You. O ocean of rasa! Please arise from Your moon-like bed! Awaken your lover, who took shelter of Your arms and who is tired from lovemaking!"


yAtA rajanI prAtar jAtaM
sauraM maNDalam udayaM prAptam |
samprati zItala-pallava-zayane
rucim apanaya sakhi paGkaja-nayane ||GLA 1.24||


"O Lord of Vraja! The morning sun, who is naturally unkind to young girls is swiftly rising! Leave the bank of the Yamuna and quickly return to Your bedroom!"

The night is over, the morning has come! The sun has risen! Arise now from Your nice bed of cool leaves!"

Then vicakSaNa, a zuka who was very attached to Krishna, and who was very calm and eloquent by nature, recited the following sweet words that were able to awaken Sri Madhavaji...

pratipada-vardhita-nandAnanda !
zrI-govindAcyuta ! nata-zanda ! ||GLA 1.28||

"Jaya Jaya to you Madhava! O source of auspiciousness of Gokula, lotus for the bee-like girls of Vraja! O Govinda, O infallible One! You increase Nanda's joy at every step and delight the surrendered souls! O lotus for the thirsty bee-like eyes of the inhabitants of Vraja! Morning has broken! Swiftly return to Your abode in the meadows, which is affectionately served by Your relatives and superiors! If not, You may be embarrassed by them!"

Thereupon, in order to rouse the lord, Svarupa Gosai directs a parrot for the purpose.
That parrot is kept in a corner of the mandap and is privy to Mahaprabhu's heart's desire, and fully aquainted with all divine principles.
Indeed the parrot is Srivasa's pet and is called Vicaksana, and so to awaken the lord, speaks in sweetest accents;

jaya navadvIpacandra! jaya vizvambhara/
zrIzacInandana jaya zrIgaurasundara//
rajanI prabhAta haila aruNa udaya/
vikazita puSpagandhe bhramarA gunjaya//
kokila DAkaye kuhU! prabhAta dekhiyA/
utha mahAprabhu ! ebe zayana tyajiyA//


Hail moon of Navadvipa! hail Visvambhara!
Sri Sacinanandana hail the beautious Sri Gaura!
The night to morning turns, Dawn arises.
Newly opening flowers difuse sweet odours all around,
the female honey bees make their soft buzzing sound.
Observing the approach of morn the kokila gently warbles and coos.
O almighty lord arise! now is time to forsake your slumber.

"O lotus eyed One! The Eastern horizon seeing that the red morning sun wants to rise, looks like a wife wearing a bright red dress (as if worn by a wife whose body is anointed with kunkuma, as she expects her husband to return home.) So give up Your sleep, O Krishna! Look! Fearing the sun, the moon has fled along with the night, so You also leave the bank of the Yamuna now and return home with Your innocent lady-love! O Krishna! The sun is rising, the cakravaki bird looks with one eye at the sunrays that colour the Eastern horizon red, and at her distant husband with the other eye. The owls, who are blind for the day, enter into their tree-holes, becoming silent out of fear of the crows. So give up Your sleep, O Krishna!"

Signaled by VRndA's glance, the female parrot, Kalokti, made her tongue fragrant with descriptions of KRSNa's lotus feet.

sita-cchAyAM praviSTo 'ty-aruNa-madaM abhUd vyaptam asyAruNimnA
utprekSyaM kavInAM mama tu matam idaM kRSNa-rAgAti-raktaM
rAdhA-cittaM mamaivAspadam idam iti tad vyasnuta svasya dhAmnA


The idea of poets is that KRSNa's lotus soles are red because the sunrise, burned by the sun's fierce rays, took shelter of the cooling shade there. My idea is they are red because, full of passionate love, RAdhA thinks in Her heart: "KRSNa's feet are my only shelter".

All the varieties of birds in Braj perform premanandamaya seva with their melodious songs and dancing and so on.
In one lila Radha and Krishna became peahen and peacock and danced together because They were attracted by the movements of the mayurs..Radhaji and Krishna danced about imitating their movements...

A sArikA named sUkSmadhI , who kept all the verses she learned from Vrinda Devi around her neck as a necklace, whose sweet words were intoxicated by drinking the wine of love for Sri Radha, and whose feathers stood on end out of that love, made her words dance on the stage of her tongue...to awaken Her she sang the following:

vrajendra-nandana-priye vrajAzu tAvad Alayam ||GLA 1.35||

sumukhi tatas tvaritam itas
tyaja zayanaM vraja bhavanam |
udaya-dharaM sarati paraM
tvarita-gatir divasa-patiH ||GLA 1.36||

nidrAM jahIhi vijahIhi nikuJja-zayyAM
vAsaM prayAhi sakhi nAlasatAM prayAhi |
kAntaM ca bodhaya na bodhaya loka-lajjAM
kAlocitAM hi kRtinaH kRtim unnayanti ||GLA 1.37||


"O beloved prince of Vraja! Quickly return home, before people start travelling over the roads of Vraja! O fair faced girl! Look, the sun is swiftly rising! Leave your bed and return to your home in Vraja! O sakhi! Give up Your drowsiness and wake up, wake up Your lover! Leave the kunja and return home! Don't give the people and chance to embarrass You! Working people are coming now for their morning work!"

At this point Radha and Krishna were both awake. They were still lying down in a tight embrace and although They were very restless knowing the night was over, They could not leave Their beautiful, happy playbed. Sri Radhika placed Her buttocks on Krishna's knees, Her breasts on His chest and Her face on His face, embracing Him around the neck and using His arms as Her pillow. Although She had awoken, She could not move Her body even slightly. Krishna became restless and wanted to rise from bed to return to Vraja, but He could not move His body even slightly because He was afraid to disturb Sri Radhika's tight embrace.


Then a zuka named dakSa, who was the teacher of a hundred thousand other parrots and who was expert in describing Krishna's pastimes, came to the gate of the kunja and began to sing with his wings flapping out of ecstatic love for Krishna:

zrAntyo'raNya-bhramaNa-bharataH suSThu nidrAti vatsas
tasmAd uccair na dadhi-mathanaM dAsikAH saMvidheyam |
netthaM yAvad gRham adhi janany Alapanty utthitA te
tAvat tUrNaM praviza nibhRtaM kRSNa zayyA-niketam ||GLA 1.42||

kAlindy-AdyAs tava surabhayaH stabdha-karNordhva-vaktrA
hambA-rAvair uSasi tRSitAn nAhvayantyaH sva-vatsAn |
yuSman-mArge nihita-nayanAs tvan-mukhAlokanotkAH
sIdanty Udho-bhara-janitayA pIDayeti pratIhi ||GLA 1.43||

samApya vaibhAtika-kRtyam utkA
sA paurNamAsI saha te jananyA |
draSTuM bhavantaM pravizen na yAvac
chayyAlayaM tAvad upaihi tUrNam ||GLA 1.44||


"Krishna! Your mother has risen and is approaching Your bedroom saying, 'O maidservants! Krishna is tired of wandering in the forest and is now enjoying His happy sleep... churn the yoghurt quietly!,' so quickly return to Your solitary bedroom! O Govinda, You must surely know that Your cows like Kalindi are all starting down the road, eager to see You. Their ears are raised and they are mooing to call their calves, being afflicted by the extra weight of their unmilked udders! Being very eager to see You, holy Paurnamasi finishes her morning duties and is coming to Your bedroom with Your mother to see You. Get up quickly from bed and return to Your room before she gets there!"

Upon hearing dakSa's word's. Sri Hari quickly loosened Himself from Sri Radha's embrace and got up to return home... Previously, the sakhis awoke and met with Vrinda Devi to witness Radha and Krishna's morning lila through the window of the nikunja.


Then a peahen named sundarI, who has proud of her absorbtion in love for Radhika, left her husband in the kadamba tree and come down in the yard of the nikunja cottage. Hari's pet peacock named tANDavik quickly swooped from the kadamba tree, opened his tail feathers and happily began to dance all around. The doe named rangiNi, leaving her husband at the foot of a mango tree, joyfully and swiftly approached the kunja-gate to cast restless loving glances upon Radha and Krishna's lotus-like faces...Hari's pet deer suraNga, who provides great joy to Him also arrived in the kunja, leaving his mango tree and fixing the waves of his gaze on Krishna's face his body was freed from the clutches of fatigue.

Then the two parrots, stroked by VRndA-devi on zrI RAdhikA's request, now calm and happy, and now ordered to glorify KRSNa's transcendental qualities, spoke, delighting the assembly.


kavibhir anavagahyaM taM mahadbhir varAko
'py aham ajita-guNAbdhiM jihvayA leDhum Ihe
yad api phalam abhedyaM laGgalIyaM su-pakvaM
spRzati tad api caJcvA tan muhur lubdha-kIraH


Insignificant I try with my tongue to lick up the limitless ocean of the unconquerable Lord's qualities, which even the great souls cannot fathom. Again and again this greedy parrot strikes an unbreakable ripe coconut with its beak.


gabhIro 'pi sthira-matir api kSaNti-pUrNaH su-zIlaH
zrI-kRSNo 'yaM sukha-maya-vapuH sa-trapo nirvikAraH
zrI-rAdhAyAH praNaya-vivazas tan-mukhAloka-jAtair
bhAvair lolo madana-vikalah sambhramAd bambhramIti


Although Lord KRSNa is very steady-minded, patient, shy, and humble, although He is the greatest exemplar of impeccable good character, although His transcendental form is by nature full of all transcendental bliss, and although all of these good qualities are eternally present within Him and they never decay or lessen, nevertheless, when He sees the face of zrI RAdhA, He becomes beside Himself with love for Her. He trembles with love for Her and wanders aimlessly as a madman.

padyArgyAcamanIya-gandha-kusumAny Ajahrur ArAdhane

The beautiful-eyebrowed girls of Vraja worship Lord KRSNa, offering their perspiration, their hairs standing up in ecstasy, the nectar of their respectful speeches, the fragrance of their bodies, and their gentle smiles as padya water, arghya water, AcamanIya water, incense, and flowers. The nectar of their embraces and amorous pastimes is the offering of foodstuff they place before the Lord, and the nectar of their kisses is their offering of betelnuts.



kAmotpattir dhRti-dhana-hRtiH saMhRtir loka-bhIter
dharmocchittaH kuvalaya-dRzAm AhRtiH patyur aGkAt
kampodbhUtiH sthiram anucare stabdhir apy ApagAnAM

Glory to KRSNa's sweet flute-music, which arouses the lotus-eyed gopIs' amorous desires, plunders the treasury of their calmness, removes their fear of public opinion, cuts at the root their pious chastity, drags them away from their husbands' laps, and makes motionless beings tremble and moving beings stunned!


guNa-gaNa-rasa-lIlaizvarya-ratnair lasanto
bahava iha jagatyAM santi dhanyA yadIttham
vadata vadata lokA AkaraH kintv amiSAM
vraja-pati-suta eko nizcitaH zrI-munIndraiH


O people, if you say that in this world many men are splendidly decorated with many jewel virtues, nectar sweetnesses, charming pastimes, and great riches, (and therefore KRSNa is not very important among them), then I say to you the greatest sages have decided that Lord KRSNa, the prince of Vraja, is the greatest and no one is like Him..

The demons greedily run after money, yet they hate Lord KRSNa, who gives all wealth to His devotees. The demons aspire for a happy situation in life, yet they hate Lord KRSNa, who is the personification of all happiness. The demons desire sovereignty over the world, yet they hate Lord kRSNa, the master of all the universes. The demons are not very intelligent, for they have become bitter enemies of the only person able to fulfill their desires.

vakSasy uroja-mada-lakSaNam ambudAbhe
rAdhAlayAd upagatasya hareH prabhAte
kaizcin na nIti-nipuNair api paryacAyi


Marks of red lac shine on His forehead decorated with pictures and designs drawn in mineral colors from the hills, and marks of musk from Her breasts shine on His monsoon-cloud chest. For this reason some proud moralists do not worship Lord Hari, who has just come from RAdhA's place.

Krishna finally arose, sat up in bed and took slender Radha who was pretending to be asleep on His lap to gaze at Her sweetness. Her eyes restlessly rolled like wagtail birds. Radhika stretched and yawned. The sakhis entered the grove joyfully smiling, joking and prodding each other. They felt great joy from watching their two Dear Ones whose lips bore the cuts from each others bites. The sakhis drank the sweetness of Radha and Krishna'a dawn pastimes. Seeing everyone immersed in the ocean of these pastimes intoxicated by love, Vrinda became apprehensive...with a wink she engaged her sArikA named zubha, who was expert at awakening Srimatiji.


The sArikA Subha said:

AgantA grAhayitvA tava patir adhunA goSThataH kSIra-bhArAn
uttiSThottiSTha rAdhe tad iha kuru gRhe maGgalAM vAstu-pUjAm |
itthaM yAvad dhavAmbA tava na hi zayanAd utthitA vAvadantI
tAvac chayyA-niketaM vraja sakhi nibhRtaM kuJjataH kaJja-netre ||GLA 1.74||

tArA-patinA saha sakhi tArA
nikhila-nizAkRta-vividha-vihArAH |
lInAH sampraty ambara-paTale
tvam api ca kuJjAd gRham aya sarale ||GLA 1.75||

"O lotus-eyed friend! Your mother-in-law has arisen, saying: "'Radhe! Your husband will come here from the barn with lots of milk carried by his servants, so quickly get up and perform Your auspicious domestic rites!' Before she says that, You should leave this arbour and sneak back into Your bedroom unseen! O dear friend! The moon, the lord of the stars, having finished with his enjoyments with his stars at night, has now disappeared from the veil of the sky. So, O innocent One, You also leave the kunja now and go home! The sunrays color the lunar path golden and people are coming on the main roads. O innocent One quickly leave the kunja and go on the auspicious path home! O Krishna! The morning has come and still You could not leave this innocent girl? Her mother-in-law, whose heart is covered with the mud of terror mistrusts Her. Her very bitter husband lives up to his name Abhimanyu (always angry) and Her dull sister-in-law always rudely gossips about Her!"

Thus the Milk Ocean of Radha's heart was churned by the Mandara-mountain of the sArikA's words. With Her eyes wandering like baby fish and saddened by the imminent separation from Krishna, She got up from bed. Seeing the restless eyes of Vrsabhanu's daughter agitated by fear, Krishna put on Her blue veil and quickly rose from bed. Wearing each others clothes, Radha and Krishna held each other's hands and fearfully came out of the kunja. Seeing the charming beauty of the early morning and being intoxicated with joy by drinking each other's beauty and sharing sweet conversation together They forgot again all about leaving the kunja. Seeing this, Vrinda Devi became upset, especially because all the sakhis were also so intoxicated with love and just smiling (not doing anything to help). She gave an eye wink to kakkhaTI, an old she-monkey that was sitting in a tree and who knows when to act.


Kakkhati recited the following:

raktAmbarA satAM vandyA prAtaH sandhya tapasvinI |
Urdhva-prasarpad-arkAMzu jaTileyam upasthitA ||GLA 1.108||


Daybreak comes dressed in red cloth like a female ascetic with matted locks (jaTilA), praised by virtuous men, her rays of sunshine rising (in the sky)." (alternate reading: Jatila, who wears red cloth and who is praised by the quarelsome, performs her austere morning-ablutions nearby, spreading her cloth to dry in the sun).


Hearing the name "jaTilA", Radha and Krishna became upset with fear and emerged from the kunja. They ran down separate paths to Their individual homes. The sakhis also became scared and started hiding here and there. Fearfully Radha and Krishna stepped across Their own courtyards, casting restless glances upon the doors of Their elders. They entered Their rooms and laid on Their beds, minds afflicted with fatigue...

On Vrinda's order the roosters woke up, craned their necks and flapped their wings. They cooed about five or six times, thus awakening Sri Radha, who became very disturbed.

Seeing that the roosters stopped Her from embracing Krishna, Sri Radhika angrily cursed them, saying: "O roosters! quickly go and coo in hell! Why are you cooing here (you're not fit to stay in My Vrindavan making such terrible sounds!)

Then, when the tiTTibhas and other birds began to sing. Sri Radhika, whose sleep was broken again, said: "HaM ho! Excuse me! Let me sleep a little longer!". and slightly stretched out Her body.

Then all the waterbirds like the kAdambas, kAraNDavas, swans and cranes and the terrestrial birds like the pigeons, zukas and sArikAs, peacocks and cuckoos awoke and began to sing nectarean songs about Krishna.

Vrinda Devi saw no other way to break Radha and Krishna's loving fatigue than to engage the old she-monkey Kakkhati in speaking some harsh words to force Them to separate. She thought..."Alas! There's no other way than this!"

Kakkhati said..."O Krishna! You contaminated these chaste girls with the mud of adultery and You will not even leave them alone in the morning time! As a reaction to all this, Jatila is now quickly coming here from Vraja!"

Simply upon hearing the three syllables, "Ja - ti - la" all the gopis turned pale and their anxiety made the ocean of their loveplay diminish to a spoonful.
