balaram to unicode bangla conversion - this is as far as I have got...

ananga - Mon, 15 Aug 2005 01:42:26 +0530
Recently I have been keeping busy making an A5 landscape booklet of Advaitadas's PDF of Prembhakti Chandrika. This fits better on my harmonium than his original A4 landscape formatting.

Ultimately I want to have the original bengali on the left hand page and tranliteration and translation on the right hand page and am only writing two tripadas (verses) per page and lots of space for annotation.

I have just reinstalled OpenOffice which handles Unicode fonts (my Office 97 doesn't) so wanted to try the unicode route as an alternative to my Office 97 dependant Executive Bengali pre-unicode font package.

I made a little experiment seeing how many errors crept in if I converted from the balaram encoding using Madhavananda Das's GGM balaram to HK conversion facility and then using my (still very buggy) HK to unicode bangla JavaScript converter.

There shouldn't be any glitches in Balaram > HK in the GGM converter. However since Balaram doesn't differentiate between D and P (.D), G and & (chandrabindu), and y and Y, and as Advaita tends to be pretty phonetic with his transliterations, I would imagine you would come across quite a few errors due to problems with the source.

Madhava, Your GGM converter is flawless. biggrin.gif

I can cope with deviations from strict transliteration, supressed final inherent vowels etc. It is my converter where the main problems lie. I haven't touched the code since May 11th this year but I thought I'd plod away with it again.

I had difficulty editing the code up to now as I'm still running ME which is quite unicode unfriendly except for IE and OO which seem to cope fine. Now I've reinstalled OO with its HTML editor I should be able to carry on.

The main glitches are the numbers and the necessity of entering nitYAnanda instead of nityAnanda (for example) for the jo-phola to render correctly. Other glitches seem more easily surmountable except perhaps the final khondoto problem sad.gif .

A Guru sister brought back a copy of the bangla PBC for me recently alas I don't know where I put it so I don't have a bangla copy to check it against.

May I ask which one is that? Does it convert from translteration to Bengali?

Ah! From Balaram to HK ! I get it now. I never tried it though.

It's a very good convertor. It does other fonts also.

I am having great troubles with MS Word 2000 fonts. Text pasted form sources like bhagavatam.net becomes useless.

Any advice on how to keep exactly the same fonts in MS Word?

Select all the text & change the font to a Balaram encoded font. When you paste, you may want to try to use Edit | Paste Special & paste the text as 'plain text', so you remove any unwanted html codes that might be creeping in.

The text there isn't Balaram encoded, it's Unicode. WXP should have versions of common Windows font that support Unicode, Tahoma being currently the best of them for our purposes.
