KOLKATA, July 26 —
The state government proposes to set up an old age home at Vrindaban for Bengali widows, the social welfare minister, Mr Biswanath Chowdhury, said in the Assembly today.
The government also proposes to set up a special old age pension scheme for those who do not want to come back to the state.
The government will provide assistance to those who will return home. Land will be provided to them for their settlement. Those who are not willing to go back to their families would be kept in the homes run by the social welfare department.
It may be recalled that the state government had set up a committee with the chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women as its head to conduct a survey on the conditions of the widows in Vrindaban. Mr Chowdhury said the state government was in constant touch with the district magistrate of Mathura to provide assistance to the widows.
