Celebrating Chandan Yatra - Thakurs in Vrindavan
Madhava - Wed, 11 May 2005 20:22:08 +0530
Today we are celebrating Chandan Yatra.

Celebration of the festival of Chandan Yatra is said to have been instructed to Maharaja Indradyumna by Jagannath Dev himself. On this day, the deity is covered entirely in chandan, leaving only the eyes visible. In some temples, the celebrations go on for three weeks.
The festival is also told to coincide with Madhavendra Puri's quest to acquire chandan for his Gopala. (CC

Wow. The chandan accentuates Giridharai's eyes so nicely!
What a pity we don't have a live feed to Vrindavan so that we could take virtual darsana. This was always a great time to be there, even a "grate" time if you took a turn grinding the chandan.
It is also Aksaya Tritiya today. Not sure what part this plays for Vaisnavas but it is widely observed in India. A day to begin new things due to the belief that they will not diminish (aksaya) if done today. Some info
here from an ISKCON purohit. I got married on this day but I had my fingers crossed so I might have a way out.
