Krsna Throws a Ball..and Kills Kaliya - Reference?

Is anyone aware of a reference for the story of Krsna trying to retrieve a ball from the Yamuna when he encounters Kaliya? This seems to be a common version of the story in Hindi children's books and movies.

I heard another peculiar version of the Kaliya-pastime. According to that legend, Krishna became black after he was bitten by Kaliya.

Maybe he tried to knock out Kaliya with the ball to avoid having to dive into the river?

Yes, this was the narrative in the 'Gopal Krishna' movie also, starring Sachin. Krishna was playing with His friends along the banks of the Yamuna with a tennis ball and Krishna deliberately threw it into the river, just so he could have the pretext of jumping into the poisonous river to retrieve the ball and kill Kaliya if He had a bit of time to spare.
It could be that such stories are folk embellishments.

tennis ball?
is that like those Indian actors playing ancient demons while wearing wrist watches and athletic shoes?
(I think the original King Kong movie was more realistic than that...)

Well, they had a tiny red tennis ball (or was it a hockey ball?) that they threw at each other and tried to catch it.
Too bad that they didn't have footballs or rugby balls in those days; the game would have got a lot more interesting!
