Week 3 Discussions - Something a little different

DharmaChakra - Mon, 02 May 2005 23:03:48 +0530
We are going to try something a little different this week and split the discussions not by chapter headings, but by topic. I'm going to start out with 4 general topics dicussed in the text. More can be added as needed.

See each topic for some recommended discussion points.

Thursday is dawning, we're half-way through our current study on an extremely important topic.

If our members are extremely busy for some reason (I don't know if you're having some holidays there, or something), we can always extend the time allotted for a particular theme to give time for the thorough treatment it deserves. However you'll have to interact with us on this and let us know what's going on.

Sorry, I am watching the discussions with interest. I have a big MCQ test tomorrow and a project to submit on Friday, so my time is taken up with that at the moment.

For my part, Dharmacakraji seems to be asking the same sorts of questions that I would ask so I am appreciating the answers to them too. smile.gif If I have anything specific to ask I will surely ask it. When does the next 'week' begin, Sunday is it?

Hmm.. I was just going to post something along these lines as well. I'm leaning towards extending the discussion period for another week, although _last_ week really didn't get going until Thurs...

The next week technically begins on Friday with new reading assignments, discussions are supposed to start on Monday. Not that you brush away the layer of dust off your copy of GTV on Wednesday night... thinking.gif

I must say, I really would find an additional week on each topic quite helpful. This would give a weekend in each period, which would make it much easier to find time to participate in discussions. Weeknights seem to really fly quite fast, and it is sometimes difficult enough just to keep up with reading the new posts in the active threads. sad.gif But then, I'm just slow. blush.gif

Well, I don't mind extending the discussion for another week for this particular section, but I think that should be limited to very important sections. Its only a 28 page book smile.gif Realistically, Madhava has 5 or 6 more books in the 'tattva vijnana' series lined up for us, and that puts us close to the end of the year before moving on to other books...

In posting 'discussion points' this week in the opening posts, I was kind of hoping someone would pick up & run with some of them... I just don't want this to look like the 'Dave and Madhava' show.

Also, I personally would like to see people posting more personal experiences. I've been following this thread with some interest, as I think Anand had a good initial point. It is hard to have real sadhu-sanga on the internet. I just don't think its impossible. What we are learning about is not dry philosophy, fit only for fireside contemplation, but practical. So, how has it fit into your life?

I wouldn't really mind just switching our discussion starting day to Thursday or something, as a permanent change. Reading starts on Tuesday, discussions start on Thursday. This leaves everyone time for the weekend to participate. Evidently the discussions take up the major portion of the time, since our reading assignments are relatively short and are something anyone should be able to squeeze in somewhere in the middle of the week.

What say?

Ok.. lets start that for Reading 4. This week's discussion will be continued over the weekend.

I am so greedy for this nectar, and I know that I don't even have time to participate properly in the current discussion sad.gif , but I still can't help but ask how we get these books. Are they in print? Are they available from Loi Bazaar or elsewhere? Sorry, but I'm like a kid in a candy store when I hear of GV books!

They are lined up on my desk, begging to be translated... blush.gif

Do you read Bengali? PM me.

I thought Advaita dasji has translated them all? blink.gif

No, just the first two. He hasn't translated everything, there's plenty more to go.

No, I don't believe so. Check his website for a pretty complete listing of his translations. Its a little old (April 2004 I believe), and I'm not sure what he has in the pipeline...

As far as I know, there's nothing in the pipeline beyond brushing on some old works, at least as far as getting anything published is concerned.
