Organizing Files for Easy Reference -
braja - Fri, 08 Apr 2005 19:02:20 +0530
Does anyone have a particular system they can recommend for filing verses, notes, and documents so they can be easily found? I'm a great fan of Google desktop and use the "find in files" feature of my favorite text editor, Editplus, but I feel a need to go to the next level and make it more systematic.
Has anyone taken the plunge and created a database? If so, do you put whole documents in there or just references to those documents? Do you break everything up by verse?

Verses you should memorize.
I find it easy enough to remember what's in which book and just open up the book from the folder where all the books are and pull the verse out.
Notes - there's a mechanism called
family unit. Within that, there's a function that goes by the name
wife that keeps reminding you of all the things you're supposed to do.
Documents - Subfolders and sub-sub-folders under My Documents, well organized. Everything's but a few clicks away.

One 'future project' I would really like to see is a move towards something like the SWORD Project (
http://www.crosswire.org/sword/index.jsp ), putting scripture into some kind of markup language independant of the UI used to access it. Granted, this would be a MASSIVE project.. but it would be cool none the less.
That said, I've thought of using a mind-mapping tool (
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=12725 ) for the task, esp when relating issues/verses together... but Ive been far too lazy to even start
I wonder if there is any program that christians use for this kind of thing...

Whoa. I see the problem. I got my family unit from some warez site and that function isn't working right. It keeps telling me things like "take out the trash" and "clean your office" instead of reminding me of the things I
actually need to do. I've been trying to rewrite that function but there is some strange API issue that I can't understand, almost like there's a binary opposite filter.
And memorization...Yeah, well, I do see the benefit of that but I'm looking at indexing every fact and figure related to Gaudiya Vaisnavism.
I *need* some kind of global index--Where is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's taking of sannyasa described, who is X Das, what does fringle-fringle mean, etc.?
Maybe it's time to resurrect the stillborn gaudapedia?
That SWORD stuff does look interesting but we'd have a lot to deal with, especially in terms of having access to English texts free from copyright, etc.

I suppose this is one of the nice benefits of Gaudiya theology.. multiple lifetimes to complete the work
No doubt copyright issues would be a big kabosh on a lot of this work. Even SWORD suffers from not having some texts/translations available. Ahh the legalities.
My point in bringing up SWORD would be that its important to keep it open, and to put it in a format that is dissociated from the UI (as opposed to FOLIO for example). Of course, I have no idea as to the format SWORD uses, and if its useful in the long term... its just an example of it being done.
I might add that Linux at least has lots of 'games' designed for memorization... (
http://www.kde-apps.org/index.php?xcontentmode=242) It would be neat to have a database/XML/whatever that you could export verses tagged for memorization into something like a flash card program... get right to work on that

I think there was a recent article on slashdot that had me looking at mindmap software for windows but I hand't seen the Linux stuff. However I do need to get a backup PC and really want to put the new SUSE on it. Once I do, I might play with some of that.

Why not try uBook? I first found out about it
here. It worked pretty good although I thought it was a bit messy in terms of design and layout.
As far as I know it did not work with PDF files, but I used it long ago and improvements could have been made. Keeping notes and so on in your files can easily be done as the program has a bookmark function. Overall I thought this was a good asset if ever I needed any references.

Yes indeed. We need to put together maps of the entire Gaudiya canon to help people locate stuff. We need to agree on a common format for this.
