Media Players - drop out

Advaitadas - Wed, 30 Mar 2005 00:31:00 +0530
After arriving home from Braja I noticed that none of my media players (win amp, win media player and real player) work any more. I wonder if something is wrong with my windows (hope I wont have to reinstall xp crying.gif ).
1. When I start Win amp the player-box appears but the music wont start. Title and artist are indicated but not the bitrate, and the music doesnt start. The player displays 0 minutes and 0 seconds played.
2. With Real player, for playing video clips, one minute is visible, and then the video freezes and the sound is not there.
3. Finally, windows media player says: 'starting.............' but doesnt start. Anyone?

Reinstall the most current verion of the media player you want to use as the dominate software and then just worry about that one instead of so many.

Then I would choose for Winamp for music. But that means that the other 2 wont work? I dont mind losing Media Player, but that is standard equipment of MS anyway, but I do need Real Player for video too........... sad.gif

Advaitadas-ji,

I recently had to re-install everything on my computer. I use both Real Player and WinAmp. When you are going thru the set up process, it will ask you which files you want to be associated with each player, as well ask if you want it to be the default player for certain file types. I am not ceertain, but check in the preferences of each player and see if you can change. Another thing I do is to not click the box (when I open or download) that says "ALWAYS USE [...] WHEN OPENING FILES OF THIS TYPE" option...this way I can always choose which one I want. It may take more time, but I like having the options.

I am no pro and only know what I know by trial and error...mostly error. SO please forgive me if I have added to the confusion or have given you bum-advice smile.gif

Because all the media-players fail, doesnt that mean something is wrong about Windows' management of mediaplayers, or that perhaps the soundcard is bust?

Srijiva is correct.

Winamp will play video too.

Thanks everyone. I think my woes are solved after downloading and installing the latest Winamp. smile.gif

I guess you are right about sound card. Try to reinstall it driver. If this will not work, I afraid you'd need to reinstall OS... sad.gif Oh, and don't forget, it can be a hardware problem. Through many years of working as support engineer, I saw many cases, when relatively mild troubles with sound hardware didn't lead to complete disappearance of sound, but rather caused a malfunction of related programs...
