Protecting my e-mail address? -

Advaitadas - Sun, 27 Feb 2005 16:43:47 +0530
I have a strong feeling that some bot-program got my hotmail address from my profile on this board and due to all the spamming that resulted from that I was forced to close it down, so I dont really have the courage to give any new e-mail address unless I know it will be safe from bot-programs. I do get a lot of PMs here so if anyone has any suggestion how I could reveal my e-mail address safely here to everyone without it being hijacked by spammers......... unsure.gif

The email address setting in your control panel doesn't make the email address appear online. You don' t have to have it visible in your profile (as in the messenger fields or the field for a url). I actually had to go into my email settings and see what email address I put in there. (I am such a geek I have about 5 or so.)

You could also just pm Madhava with your current email so he can contact you in regards to confirming your participation.

I don't know if you've ever posted your e-mail address here in its entirety. However, your it was devoured by spambots ages ago when this article appeared online, January 31 2001 to be precise.

The system in the forum software does not make your e-mail address publicly available to anyone unless you post it into a topic or something. If people click on the e-mail link in your profile, they'll not find out your e-mail address unless you reply to their mail.

Hmmm.
1. My hotmail address is destroyed by spammers, but my yahoo address isnt, while that was also mentioned in the VNN article. On GD, though, only my hotmail address is included. (I'm not arguing, you are the expert after all, I just wonder...)
2. I now have a link to my yahoo address on my own website, this too did not result in a spam bombardment.
3. So is it or isnt it safe to spell my e-mail address on the public board?

I think that Yahoo! has a better spam filter than Hotmail.

Dear Advaita das,

change your e-mail address into @gmx.de/com/net...

I never received ANY spam-mail ever. GMX really has a far-out filter-system.

Just a thought.

Knock the wood, pal. smile.gif I wouldn't push my luck on that one. Maybe it just hasn't been sold yet to the biggest spammers.

It is not safe to spell any e-mail address exactly as it is in anywhere where it is visible to the public. However, you may for example enter it into your personal profile in our forum database without any concern. If, for some reason, you need to write it somewhere in public, replace for example the at and the dots: advaitadas(at)hotmail(dot)com, along those lines.
