Bhavollasa - Secondary or Dominant emotion?

jiva - Sun, 14 Apr 2002 16:10:12 +0530
In Jiva Goswami`s commentary on Bhaktirasamrtasindhu(2.5.128),the bhavollasa is called a secondary emotion(sancari-bhava),although it is said to be very special kind of secondary emotion(sancaritve `pi vaisistyapeksaya). But,secondary emotion (sancari or vyabhicari-bhava),by definition, cannot evolve into a rasa;only a dominant emotion (sthayi-bhava)can do so.Any comments?

Mukhya-bhakti-rasa, or the primary bhakti-rasas, are commonly known to be of five varieties, namely santa-bhakti-rasa, dasya-bhakti-rasa, sakhya-bhakti-rasa, vatsalya-bhakti-rasa and madhurya-bhakti-rasa.

Inasmuch as I understand, bhavollasa-rati or manjari-bhava in itself does not evolve into a separate category of bhakti-rasa, but rather presides as a special kind of subdivision under madhurya-bhakti-rasa as a constant overwhelming mood of submission in the exclusive, partial service Svamini Radha.

Thank you Madhavanandadas.

If the love for Radha is secondary to the love of Krsna, then it can(in my opinion)properly be called a secondary emotion(sancari-bhava).But,if the love for Radha dominates the love for Krsna, what sense does it make to refer to the love
for Radha as secondary (sancari) and the love for Krsna as dominant(sthayi)?

The verse reads:

saJcArI syAt samonA vA kRSNa-ratyAH suhRd-ratiH
adhikA puSyamANA ced bhAvollAsa itIryate

"Ordinarily, feelings for Krishna's devotees, if lesser or equal to the affection one has for Krishna, are considered sanchari bhavas within the particular rasa on has for Krishna. If it is greater, and independently nourished by constant absorption then it is called bhavollasa."

Jiva continues, "Even though it remains strictly within the category of the sancharis, because it is superior to all other moods, it is categorized as a separate bhava called bhavollasa."

I find it interesting to note that despite bhavollasa's being strictly categorized among the sanchari-bhavas, it nevertheless "lacks" a prominent characteristic of the general sanchari-bhavas, that is, their nature to appear and disappear in the ocean of sthayi-bhava in the course of time. At least, I've never heard that the waves of bhavollasa would subside into the ocean of sthayi-bhava.

Kunjabihari dasa,in his Manjari-svarupa-nirupana,said:``...the love for Sri Radha...can be called a new sthayi-bhava.``He goes on to call the bhavollasa,in which the love for Radha dominates all other emotions and can evolve into a rasa, what it is in fact functionally-a new type of sthayi-bhava.

Yet because any love for a lover of Krsna is always still dependent on Krsna, the new sthayi-bhava should  be (?) understood as Radha-Krsna-rati,since it takes the dual visaya Radha-Krsna as their object.

One  might go so far to claim that the manjari sadhana is associated with new rasa;this rasa could be named, following Gopalguru, the rasa of the female friend(sangita-rasa).

Yes I was a bit surprised when I went back and read that Jiva said it was still a sanchari, as I had read that Kunja Bihari Dasji comment before and that was always my understanding. Mukunda drops that specific statement, but adds nothing to clarify.

Haridas Das discusses the verse after his translation and says, "This bhavollasa is here to be understood as the sthAyi bhAva of the sakhI-snehAdhikA sakhis. Therefore, the words suhRd-ratiH in the verse’s first line refers to Radharani’s affection for her own girlfriends, in which case it is clearly a sanchari bhava, whereas when it is the girlfriends who are feeling love for Radharani, it is bhavollasa. Radha’s love for her friends has its basis in her love for Krishna and nourishes her love for him. The manjaris’ love for Radha is both spontaneous and beginningless.

As far as its lacking the temporary characteristic of a sanchari, Jiva does say "even though it has the quality of a sanchari (saJcAritve'pi) because of its special characteristics, it is called a bhava with the name bhAvollAsa."

Vishwanath adds "superior to all other moods (sarva-bhAvApekSayA paramotkarSAt)."

The verse itself comes at the end of the discussion of sthayi bhavas, but Jiva still says "Though the author remembers this and wrote it down here, it should in fact be added at the end of the list of sancharis, because it is of the same genus (sajAtIyatvAt)."

That is about it for material here. I'll have to do a little cogitating.

Thanks Jagat.

Sri Jiva Goswamin said:``If that love for the friend-belonging to Radha`s girlfriends (sakhis) such as Lalita, and the others,
who are wessels (asraya) of the mutual love which takes a vessel, the special chosen bhakta Radha,as the object (visaya)-is the same as or less than love which takes Krsna as the object, then it is called a secondary emotion (sancary-bhava) of the love on Krsna (krsna-rati),due to the facts that the love for Krsna is the basis of it and nourishes it.But in the amorous (madhura) rasa, wherever the love for the friend (i.e.,Radha) is greater than the love which takes Krsna as the object, and nourishes and dominates that love,it is considered a special kind of secondary emotion called bhavollasa.``

For Jiva, the girlfriends of Radha are asrayas who take an asraya as their visaya;that is,they are vessel as the object of their love. And their particular kind of love is called bhavollasa.
