Vidyapati - Krishna left Braj... Radha laments

Sakhicharan - Sat, 15 Jan 2005 08:34:02 +0530
What avails the raincloud
that only passes over, and leaves the seedlings to
scorch?

Or a plentiful likeness of your lover
if you are far from him all the days of your youth?

The sea on every side, but no water
to quench your thirst.
Such is my fate.

The sandal tree has lost its fragrance,
the touchstone its magic,
the moon rains fire.
Such is my fate.

The clouds of Shravan without rain,
the sur tree bears no fruit,
the servant of Him-who-holds-the-mountain
finds no refuge...

Strange this fate seems to Vidyapati.

O my friend! My sorrow is unending.
It is the rainy season, my house is empty,
the sky is filled with seething clouds,
the earth sodden with rain,
and my love far away.

Cruel Kama pierces me with his arrows:
the lightning flashes, the peacocks dance,
frogs and waterbirds, drunk with delight,
call incessantly--and my heart is heavy.
Darkness on earth,
the sky intermittenly lit with a sullen glare...

Vidyapati says,
How will you pass this night without your lord?

Currently, my sources for the poetry I have posted of Vidyapati, Candidas, Govindadas, and so on, are three texts.

1) The Loves of Krishna in Indian Painting and
Poetry
, by W. G. Archer

2) In Praise of Krishna - Songs from the Bengali, by Edward C. Dimmock

3) Mystic Romance in Vaisnab Lyrics, by Narendra Nath Law

Endless thanks.
There is a book called Love Songs of Vidyapati translated by someone Archer. I've been on the look out for it for a while. Last time I checked Amazon it was out of stock.
I don't suppose they include the Bengali in those books?

Would you care to post a pada or Two describing Purva raga And do they offer any annotation with the songs?

I hope I'm not being too demanding biggrin.gif sad.gif biggrin.gif

My pleasure Madhanmohanji. smile.gif

Mystic Romance in Vaisnab Lyrics, by Narendra Nath Law does contain the Bengali.
In Praise of Krishna - Songs from the Bengali, by Edward C. Dimmock does provide limited annotation, I'll add that to my posts in the future if it seems informative and useful.

What follows is two padas describing purva raga.

The girl and the woman
bound in one being;
the girl puts up her hair,
the woman lets it
fall to cover her breasts;
the girl reveals her arms,
her long legs, innocently bold;
the woman wraps her shawl modestly about her,
her open glances a little veiled.
Restless feet, a blush on the young breasts,
hint at her heart's disquiet;
behind her closed eyes
Kama awakes, born in imagination, the god.

Vidyapati says, O Krishna, bridegroom,
be patient, she will be brought to you.

****************************************************************

Her slender body like a flash of lightning,
her feet, color of the dawn, stepping swiftly
among the other lotus petals. . .
Friend, tell me who she is! She plays
among her friends,
plays with my heart.
when she raises her eyebrows I see
the arching waves of the Kalindi.
Her careless look lights on a leaf
and the whole forest flames into blue flowers,
When she smiles
a delicate sweetness fills me, fragrance
of lily and jasmine.

O Kaan, you are bewitched;
Do you not know your Rai?

Aha mari!
Thanks so much.
Well I just checked Amazon agaian and it appears that it is now available, so I've ordered one, but says it may take 4 to 6 weeks sad.gif
Perhaps now, or rather at your convienience, Abhisarika?

with all respect.

Well that's good! I fully intend to go on an ordering spree soon, since I just came across a few dollars recently. cool.gif

I will post some abhisara padas, but I will start a new thread here, because it will be by Govinda Das.
I can't seem to locate any Vidyapati padas about the abhisarika nayika.

Milan pada by Vidyapati...

Radha's glances dart from side to side.
Her restless body and clothes are heavy with dust.
Her glistening smile shines again and again.
Shy, she raises her skirt to her lips.
Startled, she stirs and once again is calm,
As now she enters the ways of love.
Sometimes she gazes at her blossoming breasts
Hiding them quickly, then forgetting they are there.
Childhood and girlhood melt in one
And young and old are both forgotten.

Says Vidyapati: O Lord of life,
Do you not know the signs of youth?
