Greetings from Vraja! - Radhe Radhe!
Rasaraja dasa - Wed, 29 Dec 2004 18:48:04 +0530
Dandavats. All glories to the Vaisnavas.
I am happy to report that on Sunday, December 26 I received diksa mantras from Sri Ananta dasa Babaji Maharaja. It was truly a life changing experience. The gravity of receiving diksa is one that I pray to never forget. The days prior were filled with intense thoughts on the responsibilities such a commitment would command in both my internal and external life. Of all of these thoughts the one that held the most importance of my mind was that as a diksa disciple I would now be seen by others as a representative of Baba.
I often think of how lucky I have been through my entire devotional life to always be surrounded by those who were so sincere and heartfelt in their devotional lives and service. My challenge has always been to identify what I can do as an offering to my Guardians that will represent my appreciation for their sacrifices, guidance and mercy. I cannot offer a philosophical mind as I don’t have one. What I hope to offer is my very person.
Since I first met Srila Satsvarupa Maharaja, my harinama Guru, I stand in awe of his humility, determination and thoughtfulness. He once said to me that we need to be humble but have the attitude that we could be the “little engine that could”. I pray that I can develop even a hint of his Guru nistha.
I remember when I first started reading Baba’s books I was struck by the depth of his writings and most of all by the clear translation of how that depth was not simply intellectual but also one of his heart. Furthermore as I began to associate more with Madhavananda and Malitalalita I was extremely encouraged that Baba had such mature and thoughtful disciples who I could associate with.
In thinking of my life and what I can offer to Baba and the many Vaisnavas that have been so merciful to me I often reflect on how I want to be someone that reflects the merciful and soft hearted nature that is so evident in my Guardians. It is often said that you can judge a tree by its fruit. I pray that I can become that sweet ripened fruit that properly represents what has been given to me.
I find this especially important in my relationships with both my ISKCON family and my new family. My actions, words and deeds will be seen as a result of the association I have been given in the past and that which I receive today. If, in the least, Vaisnavas walk away from me thinking positive thoughts about myself that will indeed make them think positive thoughts about those I hold so dear to my heart.
The day before I received diksa I spoke with a senior and advanced Vaisnava from ISKCON who has been close with my family for many years. We spoke of my decision and what impact that will have internally and externally for both myself, my family and our extended family. My friend encouraged me that although there are differences they have softened with time. As these differences soften and respect grows there is hope that one day all aspiring Vaisnavas, regardless of their affiliation, will at least share a mutual respect for one another. This reminded me of my responsibility in helping make that happen. I pray that I can be such a person.
A year ago I felt a bit lost and through my new family and my ISKCON family I have found genuine concern, support and encouragement. I want to send my thank you to the many Vaisnavas at Gaudiya Discussions.com that have helped build this virtual meeting place into a true community. It is only due to the mercy of the Vaisnavas that I have managed to increase my desire to advance in spiritual life and offer whatever little I have in the service of the Vaisnavas. So again thank you as I am nothing without your well wishes and support.
Radhe Radhe!
Aspiring to serve the Vaisnavas,
Rasaraja dasa

No updates today to Vraja Journal, I'll try and catch up tomorrow and the day after. It's been keeping a bit busy here with everybody coming in and out and taking diksha, and going over archan and probably tomorrow yogapith-seva and all. I'm just going to crash out now, approaching midnight, and catch up later. Sorry for the delays.

Rasaraja,
Please accept my dandavat pranams.
Congratulations on this most auspicious and blessed event.
Thank you for the wise and inspiring words of your post -- all of them, not just the especially moving snippet that I quoted above. I was deeply touched by what you shared.
Let it be a model for us all.

Indeed, the analogy of the tree and the fruit: such wonderful graftting art someone has done...!

Dear Madhava,
Who else did get harinam and diksa? Anybody from Forum?
I will send you a PM this weekend, it has been very hectic for me too on my new job. I wish that i was there to visit Gurudeva, You and Yugal....
Advitiya - Thu, 30 Dec 2004 12:23:49 +0530
I like to share this kirtan for this very special occassion of Rasaraj.
Last night I just heard someone singing this dainya-bodhika kIrtan of Narottam Das Thakur in a house program. The tune was beautiful and as we were singing we all felt like as if we were all in Vrindavan.
I will also hold on to this utmost desire (Arti) in my heart, so that, one day I can also touch the holy dust of Vraja-bhUmi.
Here is the song for my Vraja-vasi freinds. Let Baba sing this song for you.
hari bolbo Ar madan-mohan herbo go |
ei rUpete brajer pathe colibo go ||
jabo go brajendra-pur, habo gopIr payer nUpur,
nUpur hoye runu-jhunu bajibo go ||

Ar kabe braje bAs koribo go ||
Madhava! Please feel free to correct if there are any mistakes. Because I wrote it down just by hearing. I didn't find it in any Vaishnava song book yet.

Aside Rasaraj, Braja and Tarun Kishor received diksha. Tarun Kishor is now Tarun Govinda, Baba wanted to change the name a bit since Tarun and Kishor essentially mean the same thing. Braja got diksha at the same time as Rasaraj, and Tarun got diksha yesterday. However, I'll let them tell their own stories.

Tarunji,
My picture is up on my page already for a good amount of time. I was in Spiritual Skyliner, and we drove together in October 1994 for a few 108 shows to sell paraphernalia. Just me and you....Whenever i was leaving Germany that year, from Munchen, you drove me to Bahnhof...do you remember me now? Bhakta Tommy from Croatia? I was prior to coming to Germany, living in Croatian and Italian temples. I hope you will remember me...
In 1994 i was skinnier guy, also we have another Gurubrother from Germany (previously from Slovenia) which was with me in Spiritual skyliner, his name at that time was Daya Sindhu Das, and now he is initiated since 1998 by Our Baba. I used to be so called aspiring disciple (for 5 years of course...)of Sacinandana Swami. I have recorded that same 1994 year, cd with bhajans with Gadadhar , Tattva Sandarbha and others from Spiritual Skyliner.... I am really more than happy to find you here again...You are the same good old Thorsten....pardon...Tarun...hahahahaha

Radhe Radhe
whoo, finally some time to write...
we arrived at Sri Vrindavana on December 26th.
nicely located in the MVT -guesthouse, Monika and me chilled out that evening and went to bed early.
on the next day, the 27th, i plannedto meet with Srila Ananta das Babaji and with Madhava and Malati.
so in the morning we went Loi Bazaar where i got some devotional clothes (dhotis, chaddar,...) since i stopped wearing them a long time ago...
then i left for Sri Radhakunda together with my guardian angels Madhava and Malati after we happily met at the MVT. for me it was like meeting old friends.
i felt very happy in their company.
at Sri Radhakund, Madhava showed me my room in their house (BulBul's) and by the way i met the funny man Yugal Kishor das.
we chatted briefly and then headed out for a great ecstatic parikrama round Sri Radhakunda and Sri Syamakunda.
afterwards we met with Srila Ananta das Babaji.
finally, after 3 years of writing and receiving letters to and from him, i was in his presence.
i immediately felt at ease and SAFE.
he was VERY warmhearted and very friendly.
soon i asked him about diksha-initiation, of which he anyway knew due to my letters.
he said that i should stay for one month, but as a scholl teacher i only can stay like 10 days. he then took his precious calendar and checked for auspiscious days.
man, i was praying my heart out for one of those days soon enough!
and hooray, he said: Wednesday the 29th would be great...BLISS!
so two more times sleeping and then....my goodness.
i was excited. i guess i really went on the nerves of Madhava, Malati and Yugal because i bombarded them with questions...sorry.
but i was very very sure about my decision to offer my heart to the lotus feet of Babaji Mahasaya. not a single doubt. not a second of doubt...
after two initiations in the past, i came to the final destination for which my heart yearned long enough. the shelter of a true sad-guru.
like Rasaraja das, i also stand in awe and thankfulness before my previous gurus and i know that without their help i would not be where i am now.
today we were in Srila Bhaktivedanta's room at Sri RadhaDamodara temple and i paid obeisances and i told him, that i still feel much love and respect for him.
but onwards towards the day of days...
the day before initiation we 3 made a halfway parikrama round Sri Govardhan- hill up to Manasi Ganga.
Madhava really showed me where the nectar hides!
on Wednesday the 29th, at 9.30h we all went to Babaji Mahasaya's ashrama.
he was already waiting for us and my heart was short before jumping out.
then he led me into the inner sanctum of his place.
honestly, one week before i dreamt of him and in that dream he spoke the diksha-mantras in my right ear. i woke up and told Monika then. the next day i was on spiritual adrenaline the whole day...
and it was that SAME overwhelming feeling when he spoke the mantras in my ear again, this time for real. i wanted to cry, but i thought "man, you cannot cry right now!" i pray to the feet of the Vaishnavas that this moment will always stay pacca on my mind! INCREDIBLE.
Babaji Mahsaya told me before, that my older name made no sense "the young youthful". hmmm.
so he mercifully changed my name into the new one and with it my heart, life and everything else....
but the ecstasy continued. after the initiation Babaji Mahasaya invited us all to a prasadam feast at his ashram.
in the meantime Monika came with two friends and they met with Madhava outside at Sri Radhakund.
at 1300h we should be there to honour prasad.
and it was like now the dream came truer than true.
we had such a great time and the prasad was not from this world.
still being a huge mleccha, i mercifully got the stick from Dina das because i touched the prasad with my left hand ( me so lefthanded). he instructed me nicely on some points of sadachar...
totally in bliss and happiness we left.
i felt so thankful to Babaji Mahasaya and i told him that.
also i felt and still feel so thankful and indebted to Madhava and Malati, because they introduced me so nicely into my new family.
since then, i started chanting all diksha-mantras and doing puja step by step, since i never did any puja...
i can honestly tell that these mantras are an ocean of power and nectar.
what a case of mercy i am.
all glories to Srila Ananta das Babaji Mahasaya, who showered his rains of mercy on the dry land of my poverished soul. i still hardly can believe that all is real.
on Monday the 3rd of January, with a heavy heart i will go to Sri Radhakunda a last time and say goodbye to Babaji Mahasaya.
all glories to the mercy of the Vaishnavas

On another note, we've been out of electricity since nine in the morning, it's now five in the evening, and I'm uncertain if we'll have any during the rest of the day. wow... what an awesome account, Tarun Govinda prabhu! I was sitting here listening to some devotional charts off of comcast and reading your nectar and it was truly hypnotic as I am trying to imagine you and Madhava and Malati and Babaji Mahasaya and prasadam and hills and kundas and mantras and halfway-parikramas and mercy, so much mercy! and it leaves me dizzy with wonder. I am filled with delight for you and everyone there.

Radhe Radhe!
today we visited Babaji Mahasaya for the last time this time...
he was very very warmhearted and in a jolly mood.
i just love him so much.
at the end of our darshan he asked us, if we would like to stay for lunch-prasad.
Monika, Malati, Madhava, Rasaraja, Braja, Yugal and me. so Madhava replied:
" yes, a little something we will take."
Baba replied: " no little, FULL! only full plate will do." and he was laughing and smiling like anything.
so we stayed again for lunch...again most wonderful prasad...
what mercy. still cannot really believe.
then soon we bade farewell and at the tempo-stand we also said good-bye to Madhava, Malati and Yugal.
i will miss them and i am eternally indebted to them, and of course to my Gurudeva.

Dandavats. All glories to the Vaisnavas.
Radhe Radhe!
I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragement. My family and I just returned to the US. We have unpacked and are just working on getting everyone regulated back to West Coast time. The trip was amazing for everyone.
The kids had a terrific time with the Parikramas that Dhanurdhar Maharaja brought us on and also had a great time with the other kids that made the pilgrimage. My wife had the opportunity to connect with many old friends from abroad and that live in Vraja. She also found Dhanurdhar Maharaja's daily classes on Bhakti Sandarbha to be extremely inspiring. Each day I would take care of the children so she could attend the classes and each evening she came back glowing about what she was hearing. Maharaja has promised to give nightly classes on Bhakti Sandarbha when he visits our home this spring.
Personally it was a life changing trip. From our arrival it was a very 'heavy' trip for me. Since taking diksa I have been rather absorbed, at least intellectually, in the diksa mantras and worship of my Giridhari. It is a very deep and absorbing process. I have only scratched the surface and it is mind blowing.
I am convinced more than ever that the mercy of the Vaisnavas is the most powerful thing in the world. I hope that in the future I can contribute some positive thoughts to Gaudiya Discussions as my devotional world is evolving in such a positive nature. At this point in time it is a bit hard to articulate except to say that it is fabulous
!
Otherwise I am running around trying to get together a proper altar, schedule (i.e. I am working on a daily sadhana schedule that will work realistically in my day to day life) and diving back into work related responsibilities.
I think it will be a few weeks before I have adjusted to everything and can get back into the swing of things.
Below is a picture on my new Thakurji.
I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year and is doing well.
Aspiring to serve the Vaisnavas,
Rasaraja dasa

Am I to understand that he was given to you by your Babaji?
Did you buy the outfit and eyes there in India?
It is very nice indeed.

Radhe Radhe!
Yes my Thakurji came straight from the hands of Baba. It was a very sweet exchange. I purchased the eyes and outfits in Vraja. I just put together his proper altar today. Taking care of Thakurji along with my new sadhana has been a extremely touching experience. As I am simply scratching the surface, yet finding such comfort and happiness, I pray that i can go deeper with the blessings of the Vaisnavas.

OK, I'm still playing catch-up. I didn't know that Rasaraja-ji and Braja-ji had also received dIkSa, as well as Tarun Govinda-ji. So all three of you please accept my most warm and heartiest congratulations!
Rasaraja-ji, I am assuming that Babaji Maharaja kept your name the same? What about Braja?

Bhuvaneshvar, Orissa, India
Namaste.
On my Vraja pilgrimage tour in India I have also revisited temples in Jagannatha Puri, as well as Sri Rama Mandir and the famous Lingaraja temple of Lord Shiva in Bhuvaneshvar, the city which is named after Him but orginally it was known as 'Ekaamra Vana' (Siddhaamra Shetra).
The history of this place is interesting.
One Puranic source stated that Lord Shiva after visiting His Beloved
Krishna at Nilachala Jagannatha Puri, ecstatic in Divine Love, came
to this 'Ekaamra Vana' (Garden of Wish-yielding Mango tree) and
stayed meditating on Lord Krishna and could not leave the beautiful
mango grove. Pleased and satisfied Lord of Nilachal, Sri Krishna
appeared and asked Lord Shiva that how He could bless this sacred
place. Lord Shiva multiplied into many forms of Shiva Lingas and
requested that here after this 'Ekamra Vana' shall be known
as 'Bhuvaneshvara' or 'Tri bhuvaneshvara', other epithets of Lord Shiva.
Since Lord Krishna has blessed this place of Divine Love meditation
of Lord Shiva, it is now known as Bhuvaneshvar.
It is also known as 'Hari-Hara Kshetra' as the Shiva linga (Image of Lord Shiva) that is worshipped in the Lingaraja temple contains Shaligrama (Lord Vishnu's image) in the middle, broadcasting the eternal union of Lord Krishna and Shiva.
The priests do worship the images with both 'Bilva' leaves (dear to Lord Shiva) and Tulasi leaves (dear to Lord Vishnu), 56 offerings of food preparations done everyday to the Lords. Sacred vedic hymns of Shiva and Kesava are chanted in aratis. Seems like the Vaishnavas and Shaivas are in peace here.
Another source from Skanda Purana revealed that an ancient king of
Varanasi (Benares) desired to fight with Lord Krishna and prayed Lord
Shiva to be on his side. To fullfil the desire of His devotees Lord
agreed. But in the fight the king was defeated and the City of
Varanasi was totally burned to ashes by Lord Krishna's 'Sudarshan
(Wheel) Chakra. So the homeless Lord Shiva came to Nilachal Jagannath
at Puri and prayed to stay closer to Him. Lord Krishna was happy to
let Lord Shiva to reside not only here but also at all 'Vishnu
Tirthas' (sacred abodes of Lord Krishna) and thus Bhuvaneshvar
happened to be another 'Varanasi' as the holy city of Lord Shiva, at
the out skirts of Jagannath Puri.
It appears to me that with the pretext of a fight and fire, Lord
Shiva Himself renounced His own abode Varanasi to stay closer to His
Beloved at Jagannath Puri.
The auspicious lake at the Bhuvaneshvar temple is known as 'Bindu
Sarovar' which had been formed by the sacred waters of all the holy
rivers on the earth.
When Lord Ramachandra wanted to perform the worship and bathing of
Shiva Linga (Lord Shiva) at Rameshvar, He asked Sri Hanumanji to
bring the sacred waters of all the holy places on earth. Following
his Lord's order, when flying Hanumanji was bringing the water for
the worship of Lord Shiva, one drop from the sky fell down at
Bhuvaneshvar and became the holy lake 'Bindu Sarovar'!
So the purifying effects of the water from this lake includes the
auspiciousness of all sacred rivers on earth!
Jaya Sri Radhey!

I read somewhere that in Skanda Purana, Bhubaneshwar is actually supposed to be the 'gateway' to Jagannath-Puri-dhama. Just like in Vrndavana we are supposed to pay our respects to Shiva [Gopishwara] before undertaking parikrama, so visiting Shiva at Bhubaneshwara is supposed to be done before going to Jagannath Puri.
Just thought I'd share that with you. It appears to be one of the few tirthas where Shiva and "Vishnu" are united in purpose.
Jaya Sri Radhey!
