Server Move and Forum Revisions -

Madhava - Tue, 05 Oct 2004 05:31:13 +0530
Over the following two days, GaudiyaDiscussions.Com will be moved over to a new server. The impact of the move should be fairly minimal to all of you. At one point, you will notice that this domain redirects you to a new, temporary address. That address will be used for accessing the site for two days to ensure that the DNS entries are globally updated to everyone, and in case such horrid things are in place, everyone's ISP's domain resolver caches are flushed.
Madhava - Mon, 11 Oct 2004 02:04:11 +0530
The move will take place tomorrow, beginning 13.00 GMT. The site will be taken offline, the database backed up, and moved over to the new server. The backup and restoration process itself should take only around 15 minutes. The DNS (domain name server entries) for dot com domains should nowadays take only about another 15 minutes to propagate globally, but your ISP may keep a DNS cache that takes longer to refresh.

During the transition where the DNS still points to the old server, you will see the address appear as http://66.98.190.94/gaudiyadiscussions.com/ . Once the DNS has resolved, the regular domain name will be displayed again. If you wish to speed up the process from your own part, you may also flush the DNS resolver cache of your PC by typing in ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt as you begin seeing the temporary address. If you haven't got a clue of what all this means, then Windows DNS cache flushes entries in 24h intervals by default, which in English means you can sit back for a day and it'll be taken care of automagically.

If you experience any problems in the course of the move, please write an e-mail to gdisc at gaudiyadiscussions dot com, preferably with a clear description of what the actual problem is (instead of "doesn't work").
Administration - Mon, 11 Oct 2004 21:33:45 +0530
The move is now complete, with all data intact. However as you can see, we are still using the default skin. It will be updated momentarily.
Administration - Mon, 11 Oct 2004 21:45:16 +0530
Please report all possible problems in this thread.
Administration - Mon, 11 Oct 2004 22:56:55 +0530
All custom BBCode (indent etc.) is currently inactive. Will report here once restored.
Administration - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 00:25:49 +0530
The first new skin called "Mint" has now been uploaded. You can change skins from the bottom left corner of the main forum view.

This should now be back in working order, with a couple of extra tags. See here for the available tags.

Two new features in this version of the board software:

1. Attaching images - Now, once you click "Add Reply", you can select an image you wish to add to the post. However, contrary to the way you did it before, leaving the image at the bottom of the post, you can select the image and then click "Add this attachment". Clicking on that, it is attached to the post. Now, you can click the "Add into post" button, which will insert a tag representing the image you can place wherever you want it to appear inside the post. You can also add multiple attachments into a single post if you wish.

2. Multi-quote Next to the "Reply"-button, on its right side, you'll see a "Quote"-button. Clicking on it, and the colour will change. If you wish to quote multiple posts in your response, you can select all the posts that you want included quoted in your reply.

And again, the test-zone is your friend. Go there and test as much as you like.

Madhavaji

Just FYI, since the server move, I can access the site from home.. I should test some of your other sites... maybe just coincidence (some routing/DNS getting corrected), but I'm very happy now biggrin.gif

BTW, new board looks great... nice little touches...

I'm getting a "-1 New Messages" that doesn't go away, even after logging out. Does that mean someone decided I wasn't worth talking to?

Interesting... Sent you a PM now, let me know if it got fixed.

If you choose to track a message, you can keep track of when it'll be read, and delete it from under the "Message Tracker" before it's read if you wish.

"The messages shown here have not been read by the person they were sent to. You may delete them before they are read."

Maybe someone sent a PM to the wrong person and deleted it.
Satyabhama - Tue, 12 Oct 2004 21:53:46 +0530
I don't know, I had -1 messages for awhile this morning, too!

The two PMs you sent put the counter to '1'. After reading them both, it has gone back to '-1'

Braja's count should be fixed now. If anyone else has problems with this, please let me know by how much your count is off and I'll reset it.

I've replaced two of the four links from the top right corner of the screen with a single link, "Who's online?", which I hope is a bit more relevant. If you're missing the top 10 posters lists, browse to the bottom of the front page and you'll find them there. I find myself regularly looking for a link to see who's around, and having it at top right of every screen is much more convenient than going through the front page.

Diacritics convertor has been added back in.

If you have any modification suggestions, please post them in.

I don't think I mentioned of some new BB-code yet. This ought to make the life of those posting in Sanskrit easier.

[ verse ] tags make the contents gray and centered.

[ prose ] tags make the contents gray and indented, left -aligned.

[ translation ] tags make the contents bold and indented.

This emulates the style I see Jagat coding in day in and day out. You can see all three in practice in this post.
Madhava - Mon, 01 Nov 2004 19:24:01 +0530
Would you like to have a tool that converted BB-code to regular HTML and vice versa? That should help those of you who post stuff to several places (like Jagat on his own website). [ Jagat: I can also add stuff to your text-parser there if you need. ]
Jagat - Mon, 01 Nov 2004 20:42:28 +0530
Could you make translation quotes indented both on right and left margins?

With regards my site, I have a macro to convert the BB to HTML, which facilitates crossposting.
Madhava - Mon, 01 Nov 2004 20:56:03 +0530
As a matter of fact, it already is indented by 30px. However since the right margin of the text is ragged, it isn't that visible. I have now changed the right indent of both translation and prose Sanskrit to 70px, which should make it more evident.

Note: You may need to click edit and submit modified post to make your older posts reflect this change.

Full members and moderators can now attach files to their PM:s like they can with posts in the forums.

People can now change their member titles again, this feature seems to have become defunct since the upgrade.
