'SangIta MAdhavam' - - A Maha Kavya by Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati
anuraag - Sun, 25 Jul 2004 22:20:47 +0530
Namaste.
Rasik Saint, Sri Prabodhananda Sarsvati who was identified as one of the Ashta Maha Sakhis of Radharani, Srimati TuGgavidya devi, had described the sweet Vrindavana Nikunja lilas of Divine Couple in his Maha Kavya named 'SangIta MAdhavam'.
It is loaded with exquisite melodious Sanskrit words - very much resembling the well known 'Gita Govinda Kavya' of Sri Jayadeva Kaviraja.
Here is a wonderful description of 'Mahaa Raas Pastime':- paMcadazaH sargaH: nijollAsa varNana
Begins with Prayers to the Divine Couple:
akhila bhuvanasAraM prema sarvasvabhAraM
nava madana vikAraM saukhya sindhu pracAram
madhura rasa vihAraM rAdhikA kaNThahAraM

guJjarI rAgeNa gIyate
ziva vidhi zuka nArada janitAze

This blissful pastime is overflowing with the
Divine nectar of jubiliation and playful laughter,
and deeply desired for by Sukadeva Paramahamsa,
the creator Brahma, the vanquisher of wild passion,
Lord Siva and the eternal celibate, sage Narada.
rAdhA mAdhava keli vilAse
vizatu mano mama prema vikAse
(dhruva padam - refrain)
May the sublime erotic pastimes of Radha and Madhava
enter my heart and increase my Divine Love ecstasy.
vRndAvana vana sahaja nivAse
nava rasa bhAvita mati pratibhAse .. 2 ..
These amorous pastimes only take place in the
enchanted forest of Vrindavana and are reflected
in the hearts of those who are absorbed
in the ever new bliss of Divine Love.
tikta tarIkRta mukti vitAne
hari caranojjvala bhAva vitAne .. 3 ..
This Divine ecstasy in the abode of Beloved Hari's blissful
feet makes the joy of liberation seem worthy of abandoning!
pratipada jRmbhita madana vikAre
parama rasAmRta sagara sAre .. 4 ..
The erotic daliances multiply at every moment in this
Supreme ocean of the quintessence of Divine Love nectar.
thUtkRta vidhi-pada munivara gIte
tuccha triguna jaDa prakrtim atite .. 5 ..
These blissful exploits are beyond the three material
modes and are sung by the greatest sages who spit
even upon the celestial position of Lord Brahma.
rAdhA priya parijana kalanIye
vidita nigama-vara samvaraNIye .. 6 ..
This Divine amorous pastime can only be enjoyed by Radha's
dearmost devotees and is not disclosed even in the sacred Vedas!
anta rahita mahad akalita pAre
bahu-vidha bhangima prema prasAre .. 7 ..
Even the great souls cannot find the end to all the
different kinds of sublime ecstasies enjoyed and loving
gestures displayed in the magnificent Maha Rasa festival.
ati rasa lola sarasvati gAne
kuruta hRdayam iha parama nidhAne .. 8 ..
O Rasik devotees, always keep your hearts absorbed
in the Supreme treasure of this Divine melody
composed by Saint Sarasvati who is very
fond of blissful Love of Sri Radha-Krishna!
rAdhA mAdhava keli vilAse
vizatu mano mama prema vikAse
May these sublime erotic pastimes of Radha and Madhava
enter my heart and increase for ever my Divine Love ecstasy! Jaya Sri Radhey!

When I attended Sri Kripaluji Maharaj's world wide
broadcasted discourses in Hindi, I heard him chanting
a very sublime, melodious Sanskrit verse as an invocational prayer.
Not only thrilled but also mesmerized by the beauty and Rasa
of the Shloka, I have been restlessly searching for that
verse in all Rasik literature I've come across.
The wording and the style of the verse is very specific to
a familiar Rasik Saint and I was sure it must be a composition
of Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati but unable to locate
the exact source.
Finally Swamini Radhika answered my ardent prayer!
As I was going through the pages of 'SangIta MAdhavam',
to my sweet surprise, the tearful eyes discovered
their favorite chanting: yogIndrA mRgayanti yatpAdarajas tenA 'pi yan mRgyate
vizvaM yena vimohitaM caladRzA tasyA 'pi yan mohanam
pUrNAnanda mayo 'pi yad rasa lavA ' 'svAdena dhanyAyate
taddhAma sphuTa campakacchaviciraM rAdhA 'bhidhaM pAtu vaH - sargaH 7.10
In this invocation to Sri Radhika, the Saint
is praising a few of Her inconceivable glories.
Sri Radha is anxiously searched for even by
the Supreme Lord, the blessed dust particle of
Whose lotusfeet is being searched by the great
Masters of Yoga from time immemorial.
The Divine charm and splendor of Sri Radha's innocent glances are
so intoxicating even to the most attractive Lord Whose restless
looks and spell-binding beauty enchant the entire universe!
Though complete by Itself, the Ocean of Divine bliss,
Lord Krishna considers Himself extremely blessed by
enjoying even a trace of Divine Love ecstasy of
Radharani, the Personified limitless Maha bhava. May that Supreme abode in the bright hue of golden yellow
and the ultimate Shelter of amorous Divine Love, Sri Radha,
ever bestow upon the surrendered souls all that is auspicious! - sargaH 7.10
Jaya Sri Radhey!

Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati had described the state of Divine Love ecstasy of the Supreme Lord.

Sri Radha is in front of Me, also behind of Me!
Not only Divine Beloved Radha exists in My entire visual field
but She has also established Herself in my innermost Soul!
Now She is above Me and below Me, She appears in every tree,
Her presence is felt at every place!
My Divine experience is that the whole world is pervaded
only by My Radha! What a sweet wonder!
My existence is blessed and My residence is illuminated! This Divine realization of
acintya-bheda-abheda was also expressed
by another Vraja Rasik Saint in this verse:

Saptama sarga. 9- Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati
Does the body continue its existence devoid of life?
Do the fish ever survive separated from water?
Is there any charm or beauty in the moonless night?
Without nourishment can any life be sustained? No, never!
Alas, how could even the Lord of Divine passion,
Sri Krishna, ever exist separated from His Soul,
the Love-crazy Radha, the Treasure of Divine nectar
and amorous blissful exploits!
Jaya Sri Radhey!

It is my sweet understanding that in the above verse the Rasik Saint is trying to provide a deeper reflection as he describes here the eternal (acintya) bheda-abheda relationship of the Divine Couple, Sri Radha Madhava.
1. (the body and) its soul - Sri Radha is the Soul of Sri Krishna
-the source, the spirit soul aone is the source for the body's lively form
2. (the organism and) its sole essential medium of existence - His Svaroopa shakti
the existence is made possible through the exclusive medium
-water alone provides the living medium for the fish
3. (the scene and) its cause of beauty and glory - Sri Radha, the Bliss of Divine Love
-the dull dark night is illuminated and made glorious by the blssful moon
4. (the food nourishment and) continous live action (lila)- Sri Radha alone expands Lord's blissful pastimes to impart Divine Bliss to unlimited souls - His Lila Shakti
-just as without proper nourishing food, the body itself can not expand nor multiply nor continuously perform any live actions.
Thus Lord Krishna's Roopa, Guna, Dhama and Lila are manifestations of Sri Radhika alone.
Jaya Sri Radhey!

Excellent pick, Anuraagaji. We've been looking for stuff like that. One good turn deserves another, I suppose.

May Beloved Madhava, the King of Swans,
Whose play-lake, the lotus-pond, is Sri Radhika Herself,
Whose tender bluish complexion is like that of the lotus-petals,
Whose amorous pastimes are like the exploits of countless Cupids,
Whose charming attire is of glowing golden-yellow and
Whose handsome head is adorned with the peacock feather,
awaken my heart with the Divine vibration of His flute
which even slackens the securely tied knots
on the skirts of the chaste young maidens!

SangIta Madhavam 1,14
The Rasik Saint Sri Prabodhananda Saraswati describes in his exquisite
Sanskrit poetry very much like Sri Bilva Mangala and Jayadeva Kavi-raja:
May that amorous Lord Hari filled with delight in the Love-sport,
Who has given protection from the sharp intoxicating arrows of Love
sent over Gokula by His own child, Cupid - the lord of love,
by surprisingly holding with His own two hands the elevated pair
of quivering breast-hills of Radhika, Who is trembling with fear
and anxiety as She has been set up on the tryst in seclusion
by His clever Sakhi, be your eternal Protector!
