CNN: Technology under your skin - Mexico attorney general gets microchip implant

Madhava - Sat, 24 Jul 2004 04:52:37 +0530
"Mexico's attorney general said on Monday he had had a microchip inserted under the skin of one of his arms to give him access to a new crime database and also enable him to be traced if he is ever abducted."

"Attorney General Rafael Macedo said a number of his staff had also been fitted with chips which will give them exclusive and secure access to a national, computerized database for crime investigators that went live on Monday.

"It's an area of high security, it's necessary that we have access to this, through a chip, which what's more is unremovable," Macedo told reporters."

Another recent article on CNN reported implanting microchips translating brainwaves into commands, a neural interface if you will, from an experiment with rhesus monkeys who learned to move the PC mouse cursor with their thoughts, clicking on things as requested and being rewarded for successful clicks.

All this is of course progress in a sense, but on the other hand the possibilities of abuse are immense. Especially the idea of something traceable sticked under your skin is a bit uncomfortable.

Speaking of technology, I am swapping ISPs right now and seem to be experiencing some downtime in between. Please bear with me if replies are delayed.

On the bright side, I've proven that it's possible to be without internet, most of the day anyway, for at least five days. I am still disconnected, and should be back by the beginning of next week. I apologize that I haven't had much of a chance to participate in the discussions and so forth, I've only taken care of more or less the most urgent correspondence.

So, I am finally connected and back in the business. I'll take care of all pending letters and messages over the next couple of days.
