Attention Book Lovers - Loi Bazaar Looking for Recommendations

braja - Wed, 14 Jul 2004 22:53:22 +0530
Dear All,

True to form, Loi Bazaar has been operating under Indian Stretchable Time so far, but we are slowly getting the store in order. Later this month I will be visiting India and procuring more titles. Our basic approach at this time is to carry anything related to Vaisnavism (especially Gaudiya) that cannot be found on the general market. As such the operation is more service-oriented than profit driven--"For you we make no profit!" innocent.gif With this is mind, we would like your assistance in compiling a list of titles of merit or interest, primarily English books, but titles in Bengali and Sanskrit will likely be carried in the future also, so if there is anything you want to recommend, go ahead.

We'll be adding a lot more language-related materials (Bengali, Hindi and Sanskrit study), general Indology and history, sastra translations, kavya, dance, [insert your interest here]. And we plan to have agents scouring the back lanes of Vraja, Navadwipa and Puri searching for unpublished and rare treats.

If you have any recommendations for titles that need to be made available to the Western world, please let me know, either by PM or by using the book forum at Loi Bazaar

Jaya Radhe!

I must hereby issue a strong warning against the paperback version of Krishna Bhavanamrita (Krishna Bhawna Mratam (Soft) mentioned on this list. This is a malicious bootleg which has been typed over illegally by a person who does not know the text and apparently does not know good English either. There is a good amount of text missing too, but I wouldn't know the whole picture because it was too disturbing to read through this whole monstrous misconstruction anyway. The original publication was by yours truly but I completely distance myself from it for the above reasons. No one should blame me for the disaster this bootleg has become. Buy it at your own peril.
braja - Tue, 19 Oct 2004 20:38:13 +0530
Thanks for pointing the out Advaita-ji. I wasn't aware of it. Please also note that you can buy most of Advaita's books directly from him. There is a list on his site.

A few other forthcoming items:

Satya Narayana Das Babaji

Satya Narayana Das Babaji Maharaja is a disciple of Haridas Sastri Maharaja, one of the foremost Gaudiya scholars. As such, his books and lectures are greatly respected for their depth and philosophical edge.

- Message to Disciples [English copies available immediately, Spanish in late October/November]

While primarily written for disciples of Haridas Sastriji Maharaja, this small book is an excellent summary of guru-tattva and daily sadacara, a combination of the practical and the philosophical. It covers topics such as acamana, chanting of mantras and other aspects of daily worship along with a questions and answers section that includes topics such as sex life in marriage

- Yoga of Dejection [October/November]

- Tattva Sandarbha [October/November]

- Srimad Bhagavatam Mahatmyam [available immediately]

- Nama Tattva [immediately]

- Hitopadesha [October/November]

A popular title on moral teachings.

- Madhurya Kadambini CD

- Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu CDs (set of 4)

- Bhagavad Gita CDs (set of 6)

- Bhakti Sandarbha (set of 10, 142 classes)

Jiva Goswami's text is a classic, covering essential elements of bhakti according to various classifications and with reference to different scriptures. Satya Narayana Babaji Maharaja's work on the Sandarbhas in translation is probably unparalleled. We look forward to seeing his work in printed form and highly recommend these classes.

Our new shipment arrives in Boston tomorrow so I'd like to clear the shelves a bit before the major operation of getting everything listed. Although our current stock is somewhat depleted, if there is something you were thinking of getting, you can use the coupon code GIRIRAJ at checkout in order to receive 20% off everything in stock. This sale is valid till 11/20/2004 and can be used once per customer.

I've adjusted the display a little to better reflect the current inventory status. Take a look here to see the books still in stock.

Done & done. Thanks for the discount! When can we expect to start seeing the new items come into stock? Also, I know I've ordered several things that were 'out of stock', will you be able to send me a list of what I've ordered that wasn't in stock? I'll PM you my email if so..

braja - Fri, 12 Nov 2004 04:37:42 +0530
I just got a fax from the shippers a couple of minutes ago and it seems they are already off the boat and inspected.

I may be able to make it to Boston mid-week, but more likely it will be next weekend. I'll need to rent a truck to bring them back as my car won't handle 620 kilos.

I'll give priority to getting the backordered items and special requests out first.
braja - Wed, 17 Nov 2004 08:44:42 +0530
The container has somehow become subject to more intensive inspection by Customs--I knew I shouldn't have ordered those bhang cookies!--so we're in limbo right now. Not sure how long much additional time this will add but I'll post a follow-up once I know.

On another note: if anyone has anything they'd like ordered/made/done in Navadwip, please let me know. I have a reliable young local devotee who I've been trying to assist employment-wise and any extra income that can be generated would help him out a lot. He can either ship things from there or I can bring them back personally as he will be meeting up with me in Vrindavan.

Unfortunately the new books are still stuck in an Al Qaeda rut. They are meant to clear today or tomorrow but then take another few days to reach the warehouse.

Dear All,

I leave for India today so thought to let you know that we will still be fulfilling orders, but just once a week. Unfortunately I was unable to get the new books cleared through Customs, despite a last ditch Day of Hell in New York/New Jersey, which for a while reminded me of one of those Good News/Bad News comic strips they used to have in Mad Magazine. Sadly, the day ended out of sequence with the Bad News winning out.

Besides 12 hours of driving, the highlights were:

1. being pulled over for inspections twice. The second time for a 35 minute thorough examination of the rental van I was driving after a piece of silver tape was found dangling from the bottom of the van. Note: never think of parking near a government office when driving a van. You might be the next Bazaar Bomber.

2. Being asked by a Custom's Broker, who has just looked over the shipping list: "Have you ever read the Bible? It says that worship of graven images is a sin." rolleyes.gif

We get back around January 5, so the books will be available then. My apologies to those of you who have been waiting so long.

I wish I could say "unbelievable" and mean it, but I've run into that mentality also. Because of my bumper stickers I regularly get little Christian tracts pushed into the gap in my car window on hot days (and I mean little as in 1 " square--just a thought, if you want someone to read your religious tract make it easy to read!) And I've had lengthier run ins that I won't go into now.

I am sorry you had to go through all of that! What a day!
