In Lalita Madhava Nataka, Act 9 is called Chitra Darshan. Satyabhama (Radha) is dressed as Rukmini (Chandravali) and Krishna somehow does not recognize her. He thinks she is Rukmini, whom he knows to be Chandravali.

Krishna is in the New Vrindavan gardens in Dvaraka, and New Vrinda Devi comes with a book of pictures of Krishna lila, starting with Vrajalila. As they are going through the album, they come to a picture of Krishna arriving in Mathura.

Radha asks, "Nava Vrinda dear, who is this woman who is pulling on Krishna's yellow cloth?"

Nava Vrinda smiles but looks away.

Krishna laughs and says :

aniyuktApi nipuNA dUtIyaM tvayi vatsalA |
mAm abhyarthayate dhRtvA paTe goSTha-ninISayA ||54||

This is a clever lady who holds you very dear, my Queen. Without even being engaged by you, she is pulling on my cloth and imploring me to return to Vrindavan to be with you.

Radha answers, esA muhalI-kida-bamhaNDA kitti-maMDalI, tA kettiaM Dhakkissasi ? "Come on now, the whole world has been singing the glories of this event. How much do you think you can hide?"

In other words, the story of Kubja is well known--does Krishna really think he can fool anyone with a lie like that?

A nice mangala verse from Vishwanath's Madhurya Kadambini.

bhaktiH pUrvaiH zritA tAM tu rasaM pazyed yad-Atta-dhIH |
taM naumi satataM rUpa-nAma-priya-janaM hareH ||

Though previous mahajanas had taken shelter of Bhakti Devi, now by the mercy of Srila Rupa Goswami, fortunate persons attain the intelligence to realize bhakti in her rasa form. I constantly pay my obeisances unto Sri Rupa Goswami, who is very dear to Hari.

That alone is the highest Dharma of men,
from which follows devotion to Sri Krishna,
- a devotion which is absolutely motiveless
and knows no obstruction, and as a result
of which the soul realizes the
All Blissful God and thus attains His Grace.

A Dharma well performed is but labour lost,
if it fails to generate Love for
the stories of Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

AJjAya ivaM guNAn doSAn mayA ' 'diSTAnapi svakAn
dharmAn saMtyajyaH sarvAn mAM bhajet sa ca sattamaH

He who knowing the merits and demerits
(of religious duty and its opposite)
gives up all Dharma even as sanctioned by Me,
and worships Me in Love, is the best among sages.


Dharma joined to truthfulness and compassion
or learning coupled with austerity,
never wholly purifies the heart and mind
which is devoid of devotion to Me (Lord Krishna).


(Bhagavatam 11. 11. 32 and 11. 14. 22)

'mannimittaM kRtaM pApaM maddharmAya ca kalpate
mAmanAdRtya dharmo 'pi pApaM syAn matprabhAvataH


In Padma Purana Lord says-

The sin that is performed for My sake is not sin, it is 'Dharma'.
But the 'Dharma' that is performed without devotion to Me is sin.

Saint Sri Tulasidasji said -

tajyo pitA prahlAda vibhISaNa bandhu bharata mahatArI
bali guru tajyo kAnta brajavantani bhe saba mangala kArI


Prahlada Maharaj left his father,
prince Bharata gave up his mother,
Vibhishana escaped from his brother, Ravana,
Bali Maharaj ignored his guru and
Gopis renounced their own husbands and family.

All these elevated souls had become great due to their
exclusive loving surrender to their Lord.

The Rasik Saint Sri Jayadeva had described the 'Maha Raasa Lila'
in the fourth song of Gita Govinda Kavya.

He sings in the above verse that Lord Krishna's golden pitambara attire is being pulled by a passionate Gopi leading towards the secluded charming groves of Vrindavan, filled with Divine desire for amorous pastimes in the soothing cool waters of Yamuna River.

Devotees absorb the fragrance of your lotus-feet wafted to their ears by the wind of the discipline of "hearing". Holding fast your feet by the ardour of their intense devotion, you do not forsake their lotus-hearts. (Bhag 3,9,5)

.... karnayo sphura.. or is the reading kanthayo sphura..
suppose it's of little consequence, I prefer the latter I think as hRt-kaNThayoH seems to imply some sort of outburst from the heart to the voice box, whereas the ears are only receivers.

As for the sweetness and beauty of sound, I like to share these musical and charming verses from the famous Gitagovindam of Jayadeva when he describes the amorous play of Radha and Krishna:

Since even truth devoid of the fragrance of Krishna's lotus feet is false to us, what do we care about your arguments concerning the truth or falsehood of this world?

Don't know where that comes from. It's quoted by Sri Jiva in Paramatma-sandarbha (84). It may well be his own, but I doubt it, because it doesn't scan. That should probably be "kRSNa-pAdAbjam antarA."

Love of Krishna has an amazing nature—externally it burns, while inwardly it is full of bliss. Tasting this prema is like chewing hot sugarcane—it burns the mouth, but still cannot be given up. Only a person who has such prema in his heart can understand its effects, which seems like a mixture of poison and nectar. (CC Madhya 2.50-51)

Devi Paurnamasi told Nandimukhi,

pIDAbhir nava-kAla-kUTa-kaTutA-garvasya nirvAsano
niHsyandena mudAM sudhA-mAdhurImAhaGkAra-saGkocanaH
premA sundari nanda-nandana-paro jAgarti yasyAntare

“Love for the son of Maharaja Nanda causes such pain
that it destroys the smug pride

can truly know the intensity and power

The Rasik Saint fondly relishes
that Beloved Lord Sri Krishna being

He is the limit of extreme skillfulness
and the final perfection of the four-faced
Lord Brahma's entire creation!
He is also the zenith of heavenly fragrance and
wondrous pastimes of amorous Divine Love!

The Lord Himself is the culmination of Supreme fortune
and the end limit of blessings for the enchanted land, Vrindavan!


This verse reminds us the verse from Sri Radha Sudhanidhi:

saundaryasyaika sImA kimapi nava vayorUpa lAvaNya sImA

Note that the poets have used 'sIma' for Lord Krishna and 'sImA' (feminine) for Radharani!

Sri Radha enjoys amorous Divine pastimes with Her Paramor,
always be absorbed in contemplating upon the sweet elixir of
Divine Love treasured in the lotus feet of Sri Radhika.

This verse is one of the eight 'rAsa krIDASTakam' verses -

The countless young damsels of Vraja simultaneously
performed rhythmic, graceful dance gestures,
sang musical tunes and made thrilling sounds on the cymbals.
Lord Krishna joined them showing great appreciation
displaying wonderful synchronizing
movements of His slender playful eyebrows.

Having Himself fully absorbed in Gopis'
ecstatic song of Divine Love,

Lord Krishna, the Divine joy of mother Devaki,
sported blissfully playing His enchanting flute.

What do we care for all these holy scriptures,
or the wise illuminating paths described in them
and followed by so many evolved pious souls!

What do we need them for if there are no sweet amorous

I don't even care for the opulence of Vaikuntha
if there is no Radhika, the Personification of Divine Love,
but I will remain here in the blessed land of Vrindavana
for millions of births, enlivened by the sweet hope of
attaining Her passionate Divine Love.

Last day of July. Remember Radha.

Paurnamasi looked at Radha's purva-raga and said,

pratyAhRtya muniH kSaNaM viSayato yasmin mano dhitsate
bAlAsau viSayeSu dhitsati tataH pratyAharantI manaH
yasya sphUrti-lavAya hanta hRdaya yogI samutkaNThate
mugdheyaM kila tasya pazya hRdayAn niSkrAntim AkAGkSati

Monks in their caves beat their minds just to drag
them away from mundane thoughts,
but this girl tries desperately to fix her mind on the mundane,
pulling it away from her unswerving meditation on him.

And the yogis concentrate in the hopes of attaining
even a moment's vision of him in their hearts,

is being pulled by a passionate Gopi
leading towards the secluded
charming groves of Vrindavan, filled with Divine desire for
amorous pastimes in the soothing cool waters of Yamuna River.
