Sri Nitai guna kirtan - A pada by Poet Atmarama das

Madanmohan das - Tue, 29 Jun 2004 07:44:54 +0530
Was trying to find this pada for some time. I remember hearing it and knew it was included in the big Vaisnava Padavali, which regretfully is no longer in my keep. Anyway, I was browsing through Sri Ananta dasa pandit's book called "Sri Sri Nityananda Mahima", and in the appenix, lo there it was.

khanjan ganjana, locana ranjana,
gati ati lalita suthAn /
calata khalata puna, puna uthi garajana,
cAhani banka nayAn //

His playful eyes defy the restless Khanjana birds,
his gait and posture are utterly delightful,
again he stumbles while he walks, falls in a swoon and
again rises with a loud roar, glancing askance with rolling eyes.

gaura gaura bali, ghana dei karatAli,
kanja nayane bahe lora /
premete avasa haiyA, patitere nirakhiyA,
Aisa Aisa bali dei kora //

As he sings "Gaura Gaura!", loudly clapping his hands,
copious tears stream from his eyes; in a transport of ecstatic love,
he espies some fallen soul(s), and urging them by saying,
"Come, come here", with which he folds them in a warm emrace.

huhunkAra garajana, mAlasAta punah puna,
kata kata bhAva vithAra /
kadamba kesara janu, pulake purala tanu,
bhAiyAra bhAve mAtoyAra //

He roars and rumbles and repeadedly plays the wrestlers' challange(?).
What the ecstacy! what the rapture! Like the soft prickles of the Kadamba
flower, his body is thrilled with horripilation-mad with ecstacy of the brother(?).

Agama nigama para, veda vidhi agocara
tAhA kaila patitere dAn /
kahe AtmarAma dAse, nA pAila krpAlese,
rahi gela pAsAna samAn //

That which is beyond the scriptural canon and not to be discerened through
Vedic rites, as a gift he has confered upon the base, but AtmarAma dAs says,
" I never recieved a particle of that grace and I remain hard as adament".

Are mora Are more nityAnanda rAy/
Ape nAce Ape gAy caitanya bolAy/
lamphe lamphe jAy nitAi gaurAnga Aveze/
pApiyA pASanda jata nA rahila deze//
pattavAsa paridhAna mukuta sravaNe/
jhalamala jhalamala nAnA AbharaNe//
sange range jAy nitAi rAmAi sundara/
gauridAsa Adi kari sange sahacara//
caudike hena (mora) nitAi hari bol bolAy/
jnAnadAsa nizi disi nitAi guna gAy//

Ah my Nitai! ah my Nityananda ray!
He dances and he sings and makes people say "Caitanya!".
Capering and jumping high Nitai moves, possessed by Gauranga,
and all the iniquitous heretics flee the land.
Oh, he is adorned with pleasing silken garments,
and has a pearl earing pendant from one ear;
he glistens and sparkles with many ornaments on his body.
He proceeds in the playful company of Ramai sundara and
Gauridas and others, all his faithful and devoted followers.
[i]On all sides my Nitai exclaims, say Hari! and causes all to say,
And Jnana das sings his glory both by night and day![/i

Anangji,
From your signature..

"nam shune jar eto prem jage, chokhe ane koto jol, shåkhi she håri kæmon bol

help with translating this please! Its the first line of a very sweet song."

Though I can not claim I am very good in english but still I am trying ...... let me know if it works for you....

"nam shune jar eto prem jage, chokhe ane koto jol, shåkhi she håri kæmon bol "

By hearing whose name love arises in heart, bring so much tears in eyes....

O Shaki tell me how that Hari is......

or how about
prem arises in the heart of one who hears the holy name and so many tears follow. Tell me Shakhi-re how is that hari.

I'm never sure how faithful I need to be to the original while still retaining the mood or flavour of the original.

I've got the words for the whole song minus a line which I cannot make out on the tape and didn't reproduce well on the photograph of the page of Dada's notebook written in decade old biro so I'm a line or two missing of the complete song.

Anangaji Pranam,

But I think "prem arises in the heart of one who hears the holy name " is not actually correct.....

As when we are referring to "that Hari" by hearing his name prem arises in heart and tear follows : would be correct translation.
