Irc Chat -

Madhava - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 20:52:31 +0530
Would anyone be interested in a Gaudiya IRC chat channel linked from the forums?
Openmind - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 20:54:13 +0530
Sure! It also would be a much easier way to ask short questions than writing emails. smile.gif
Gaurasundara - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 21:20:01 +0530
Depends which server. I usually hang out at Undernet myself. Efnet is known for rude people, while DALnet is a bunch of weirdos.
Openmind - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 21:25:55 +0530
Cant we make a room for members only, protected with a password?

Well, I wouldn't expect many outsiders to come in. I'd prefer DalNet because of the possibility to register your nicks and all of that.
Openmind - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 22:56:55 +0530
There is at least one unwanted outsider sure to be expected.
Madhava - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 23:02:13 +0530
We'll have OPs to kick disturbing elements out the door...
Madhava - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 23:08:34 +0530
In addition to a chatroom, this should serve as a good means of instant messaging when we need to sort things out. For those of you not familiar with IRC, there's a possibility for opening private chats there, too.

In fact, here goes:

http://www.gaudiyadiscussions.com/chat/

That's an online java-applet that will work as an IRC-client for you. For those of you who use your own clients, it's at dalnet and the channel is #gaudiya.

Remember, although you see me on the channel practically 24/7, I'm not around anywhere close to that often. I check in now and then to see if something's going on, but I don't live on the channel, and I also don't live at my PC, most of the time anyway.
Madhava - Tue, 06 Apr 2004 23:26:43 +0530
If you have any problems using the applet, drop me a note.

The applet seems to be a trial version that works only five minutes. I'll have to look into this.
Madhava - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 01:58:04 +0530
So it's all fixed up now.

Oh yes you can register your nicks on any server. But yes, I just remembered that the big advantage with DALnet is that you can have a nick as long as you want. UnderNet and EfNet only allow nicks with 7 letters or less.

So you've set it up? Let me try it! biggrin.gif

(I've been hanging out on IRC since 1996 so let me see what you've done! biggrin.gif )

Yes, OpenMind, ops can kick/ban any intruders. wink.gif That's another benefit of IRC. laugh.gif
Gaurasundara - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 16:57:11 +0530
Ah cripes, I can't log in because these uni computers do not allow me to download the Java virtual machine which is necessary for this web-based IRC chat.

I am first going to see if I can access #gaudiya from the IRC webpage itself. If not, I will download the mIRC client which is the best client for this type of chat and has been in use since 1992 or something.
Gaurasundara - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 17:02:37 +0530
Ok great, I forgot the address for the appropriate official IRC webchat page so I went ahead and dl'ed the same mIRC client I've been using since 1996. I can see you! smile.gif

Seems you're going to be one of those dead bots I always see around the place until you wake up. smile.gif

Just in case anyone cannot access the channel through Madhava's applet, download the mIRC client at http://www.mirc.com and select the one closest to your country. If you cannot figure out how to install and need help then let me know.
Openmind - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 17:58:00 +0530
When I try to conect, I get the error message:
"autokilled for [AKILL ID:1045553352K-a] [exp/javauser] Your host/IP has been banned from DALnet. Visit http://kline.dal.net/exploits/akills.htm#comp for more".

This is strange, given that yesterday evening I could connect the chat. What can be done?
Madhava - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 18:09:29 +0530
Please see if the problem persists even with the old java applet ( http://www.gaudiyadiscussions.com/chat/OLD ).
Openmind - Wed, 07 Apr 2004 18:34:38 +0530
With the old applet I could log in without any problems, but only for 5 mins. smile.gif

Is anybody actually using this IRC chat facility, or am I just hanging out there at the wrong times?

So far I've only briefly chatted to two members apart from Madhava.

Madhava, glad to see that you've actually registered the channel.
Gaurasundara - Fri, 16 Apr 2004 20:54:10 +0530
It is a good facility for real-time chat with other devotees here.
Madhava - Sat, 17 Apr 2004 00:20:52 +0530
If someone has problems using it (despite reading the short how-to-use), I'd like to hear about them.
Rasaraja dasa - Sat, 17 Apr 2004 09:47:17 +0530
Dandavats. All glories to the Vaisnavas.

I finally got on after trying various channels.

Some servers seem to do some local discrimination on whom they let in and whom not.

Right. I found that when I inputted some random characters in my info as I have been doing for years (ahdsgflhsdglfd, etc.), the server refused to let me online because apparently I was a recognised trojan (!). Inputting of proper words (though not necessarily true) works better.
Madhava - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 02:38:05 +0530
We have an ongoing all-time record taking place at the IRC-channel, a total of five participants!

Gaurasundar, could you key in short instructions on how to install Mirc?
Advaitadas - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 02:48:19 +0530
6 now
Gaurasundara - Sun, 25 Apr 2004 03:36:58 +0530
Please also remember that there may not be many people at any one given time.

For best results, it would be great to arrange a time to meet on the channel so we can all partake of the nectar of each others association! cool.gif

It is hard because of time differences world wide.

BTW Madhava, is it possible to have emoticons on the irc and can one copy and paste large texts in this small writing space somehow?
Madhava - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 17:04:50 +0530
Unfortunately, there are no emoticons there. Some IRC clients do support them, but I don't think Mirc does. You can use the textual equivalents instead.

CODE
:) :( :P :D etc.

To make your writing space bigger in Mirc, go to Tools > Options > Display > Options. In there, check the "Multi-line edit boxes" box. That'll do the trick.

I believe irc has a 256 character limit per message, not sure tho. Even tho the writing space is small it will still take and output the text up to the character limit.

Last time I checked (like a year ago) there were some scripts for mirc you can download that will get around the character limit.
Gaurasundara - Thu, 29 Apr 2004 22:18:29 +0530
Yes it is possible to copy-and-paste large text, though that all depends on how large the text is. Like dhaa says, there is a limit per message, not per the pasting capability itself.

A couple of days ago, myself, dhaa and Rasaraja were "diving into the nectar" of Vilapa Kusumanjali 77. I ws pasting some extracts from Pandit Ananta das baba's commentary and it was pasting very well i.e.: the text was too long for the specific message limit and the program tranferred the overlapping text into the next message, making it look like I had written two messages.

Never mind, yes it is possible to cut and paste. smile.gif
