Unicode - Its use in Sanskrit texts for online viewing
Elpis - Mon, 15 Mar 2004 01:47:50 +0530
Dear all,
Does any of you have any experience using Unicode to represent diacritics in Sanskrit texts to be used for online viewing? I have a bunch of material, but the problem is that each browser seems to have its own problems displaying the diacritcs; none of them get it quite right.
Sincerely,
Elpis

The first issue we have is with the fonts. Of the mainstream Windows fonts, practically only Tahoma has all the diacritic characters we need. Verdana and Arial have most of them, though some important ones are missing.
If you intend to have something online, I recommend you use the HTML-tags for the Unicode entities. For this, check out the GGM Encoding Convertor. View the source code to see the HTML-equivalents of Unicode diacritic characters.
It is not a mature platform.

Just looked at vedabase.net with Konqueror on Linux. Displayed a couple of diacritic characters with dots under, and that's it.
I have no idea what Mac would do.

does anyone have experience in entering the more obscure Unicode characters for diacritics/devanagari/bangla. What method do people use.
What is the equivalent alt-numeric keypad equivalent for Unicode ie the numbers U-follwed by a HEX number?
