Govinda Das is considered the greatest poet of Brajabuli language and one of the great poets of Bengal. He appeared in Srikhanda, Burdwan District, probably in the third decade of the sixteenth century. He is the younger brother of Ramachandra Kaviraj, the close friend of Srila Narottam Das Thakur (rAmacandra-saGga mAge narottama-dAsa, — "Narottam prays that he may have the association of Ramachandra.” - PrArthanA song 40). Like his elder brother Ramachandra, Govinda Das also accepted initiation and shelter at the lotus feet of Srinivas Acharya.

Although Krishna is God, He relishes being subordinate to His devotees. Sometimes in Srimati Radharani's loving dealings with Krishna She manifests transcendental anger toward Krishna and refuses to see Him. Krishna relishes Radharani’s anger and becomes overwhelmed with ecstasy. Krishna has to devise some method to break Radharani’s loving sulkiness, and this pastime is known as mAna-bhaJjana-lIlA, the pastime of breaking Srimati Radharani’s anger. In the following song, Govinda Das describes a wonderful way in which Krishna once broke Radharani’s angry mood.

go-rakha jAgAi ziGgA-dhvani zuna-ite
jaTilA bhikha Ani dela
maunI yogezvara mAtha hilAyata
bujhala bhikha nAhi nela


Hearing the sound of a buffalo-horn, the cowherd people awakened. Bringing some alms, Jatila, the mother of Abhimanyu,
Radharani’s so-called husband, offered them to the beggar. Disguised as a beggar-yogi, Lord Krishna, the master of all yoga, was silent.
He tilted His head. He would not accept the alms.

jaTilA kahata taba kAhA tuhu mAgata
yogI kahata bujhAi
tere vadhU hAta bhikha hAma leyaba
turitahi deha pAThA


Jatila said: “What do You want, then?” The yogi said, “Your daughter-in-law should offer
the alms with Her own hand. Only then will I accept them. Send for Her at once.”

parivaratA vinu bhikha leu yaba
yogI barata hoye nAza
tAkara vacana zunite tanu pulakita
dhAi kahe vadhU-pAza


“If I accept alms from you [and not from Srimati Radharani], then My yogi’s vow will perish.”
Hearing these words, and the hairs of her body now standing erect, Jatila ran to the side of her daughter-in-law.

dvAre yogI-vara parama manohara
jJAnI bujhala anumAne
bahuta yatana kari ratana-thAlI bhari
bhikha deha tachu ThAme


Jatila thought the supremely charming yogi at her door must be a great sage.
With great effort she gathered up some offerings.

zuni dhanI rAi Ai kari uThala
yogI-niyaDe hAma yAba
jaTilA kahata yogI naha Ana mata
darazane hoyaba lAbha


Hearing the commotion, beautiful Radha came. “I will go to the yogi,” she said. Jatila affirmed,
“This yogi is not an ordinary man. Simply by seeing Him, one attains a great spiritual treasure.”

godhUma-cUrNa pUrNa thAlI para
kanaka-kaThora bhari ghiu
kara-yoDe rAi leha kari phukara-i
tAhe heri tharahari jIu


On the tray was an offering of wholewheat flour and a golden cup with some ghee in it.
Taking the tray in Her hands, sighing with love and Her life’s breath trembling, Radha brought the offering to the yogi Krishna.

yogI kahata hAma bhikha nAhi leyaba
tuyA mukha-vacana eka cAi
nanda-nandana para yo abhimAna so
mApha karaha yAi


The yogi Krishna said, “I will not accept this offering yet. First I wish to hear a single word
from Your mouth. I am Nanda’s arrogant son. Say that You forgive Me, and then I will depart.”

zuni dhanI rai cIre mukha jhAmpala
bhekha-dhArI naTa-rAja
govinda-dAsa kaha naTa-bara-zekhara
sAdhi calata mana kAja


Hearing these words, beautiful Radha covered Her face with Her cloth. Then Krishna, the king of dancers, took the alms.
Govinda Das says: His heart’s mission accomplished, Lord Krishna, the crown jewel of all dancers, took His leave.

"... Madhava is avid
and the girl enchanted.
He is a connoisseur
of the flavors of love
and She wholly artless.
She repels His hands
when He reaches out
and Her eyes well up only
as He gazes Her.
She trembles with fear
he forces His way.
as He kisses Her mouth
She covers Her face
and takes to the earth
like a puppet in shock...."


"The cloud is only a cloud of water
and lightnings singe the eyes.
Hard to touch are emerald and gold.
And yet this pair, fair skinned and dark,
have relighted my sight.
Their Bodies and Minds forever fresh,
Radha and Madhava,matchless, shine.


What God has formed Them
and brought them together
in a union of darkness and light?

Both upheld in the flowing cups
of Each Other's Eyes,
long for the Lover's drink.
Their Lips open for the nectar of desire
in a frenzy of loving -
and Their Bodies intermingle
in a tangle of Arms,
searching-seeking the end."


"...Arrows were discharged
from Eyes to the Eyes
and the Arms were enraged
in reconnaissance.
Then the Bodies enraged at close quarters.
The conquest was complete."


"When Radha retired
on the Breast of Shyam,
suffering the Lover's fatigue,
Her Face resembled the graceful autumn night's Moon.
As the Image of Love,
reclining,carved in Emerald,
recieved Her votive gift,
Radha sank like a Garland of Golden Champaka bloom...."


"Radha cries for Shyam
with Shyam in Her arms:
"Where are You gone,
O Lord of My Life?"

Love knows no wisdom, O friend.
The Lover embraces His Love
and yet Both, unaware, faint away
in anguish, estranged.

(Radha repents of her coldness.)

"Hari! Hari!" she calls, lying on the ground she rises up.
Speaking trembling words.
Looking at the blue sky thinking of his wandering,
She asks from the birds wings:
"What avails the moon, thick smearing of sandal paste,
Kisalaya leaves, or lying on the ground?

Bring him, friend, bring him to my feet," a remedy
Gobind Das knows not.


Nilacala kanakacale gora
govinda phagu ranga bhela bhora
deva-kumari nari gana sane
pulake kadamba karambita anga
phagu khelata gaura tanu
prema sudha sindhu murati janu
phagu aruna tanu arunahi cira
banka nayane jhara aruna hi nira

At Nilacala Puri , the golden mountain Gora
becomes overwhelmed in the bhavas of Govinda's Holi festival.
While re-enacting this pastime with Lord Jagannatha's devadasis,
His body erupts with goosebumps the size of kadamba flowers !

The kumari devadasis throw red powder over Gora's limbs.
O, His body forms a nectar ocean of prema.
Thus everyone's body and clothes become red,
as red tears stream from their sidelong glances.
The flower garlands around everyone's necks turn red
and so do bhaktas as they sweetly sing.
All sorts of ecstatic symptoms surge from Gauranga's body,
and Gadadhara looks on with a tender smile,
Govinda dasa says : I cannot understand why.

kali timirAkula akhila jIva heri
vadana-cAnda parakAza
locana-prema- sudhA-rasa-barikhaNe
jaga-jana-tApa vinAza


Seeing the innumerable souls lost in the darkness of Kali-yuga,
Caitanya revealed His moonlike face and destroyed the sufferings
of all living entities with a nectar shower of enchanting spiritual love.

gaurAGga karuNA-sindhu avatAra
nija-guNe gAnthiyA nAma cintAmaNi
jaga-jane parAyali hAra


Gauranga, the ocean of mercy, descended to this world, and,
stringing together the cintamani jewels of His own holy names
with the thread of His loving qualities, He garlanded all the souls of this world.

bhakata-kalapa-taru antare antaru
ropali ThAmahiJ ThAma
yachu pada-tala avalamba-i panthika
pUrala nija nija kAma


He constructed a resting-place for the souls traveling in this
world — the shade of the wish-fulfilling desire tree of His devotees.
Those souls who take shelter of their feet find all their desires fulfilled.

bhAva-gajendra caDAyala akiJcane
aichana pahuGka vilAsa
saMsAra-kAlakUTa viSe tanu dagadhala
ekali govinda dAsa


The regal elephant of bhava has picked up the devotees for whom
Krishna is the only treasure and placed them in the Lord’s pastimes. Only
Govinda Das is left behind, burning in the deadly poison of birth and death.

When you heard the sweetness of kRSNa's flute-music, I blocked your ears. When you gazed at kRSNa's handsome form, I covered your eyes. You were very determined to be enchanted by Him.

sundari taikhane kahala mu toya
bharamahi tA saJe leha bADhAyali
janama goGAyabi roya

(Refrain) O beautiful girl, the enchantment of your love for Him grew stronger and stronger. In the end you will pass this lifetime only in weeping.

bini guNa parakhi paraka rUpa lAlase
kAhe soMpali nija deha
dine dine khoyabi iha rUpa-lAbaNI
jIba-ite bhela sandeha

For no reason you pined to attain Him. What has become of your body? Day after day the beauty of your body wasted away. Now even your life is in doubt.

yo tuhu hRdaye prema-taru ropali
zyAma-jalada-rasa-Aze
so aba nayana nIra ghana siJcaha
kahatahiM gobinda-dAse

In your heart you planted the tree of love for Him. You expected the dark raincloud of kRSNa would water that tree with its nectar rains. Alas! Now that tree is watered only with the tears from your eyes. Thus says govinda dAsa.

kAnu-kathA zuni gadagada bhASa
milati sahacarI rA-ika pAza

After hearing kRSNa speak broken words in a choked voice, the gopIs approached rAdhA.

kahatahi sahacarI zuna bara gora
tuyA lAgi hAlata nanda-kizora

The gopIs said: O beautiful fair girl, please listen. Nanda's son trembles with love for You.

tuyA rUpa nirakha-i taru de-i kora
hera-ite galatahi locana-lora

Thinking it is Your beautiful form, He embraces a tree. Tears stream from His eyes.

yaba nahi sundara karabi payAna
taba jI-u tejaba nAgara kAna

If You do not go to Him, the hero kRSNa will give up His life.

saha-i nA pAra-i madana-hutAza
cAmara DhulAyata gobinda-dAsa

He has no power to bear kAmadeva's flames that now surround Him. As these words are spoken, govinda dAsa moves the cAmara-whisk.

With the edge of her garment
a beautiful gopi covers her face.
She has become like a greedy bumblebee or a cakora bird.
Yearning and yearning, she walks.
Is the half-covered circle of her face really an autumn lotus?
Is her forehead a moon on the eighth night?
She enchants Madhuripu's heart.
Now He is bewildered. What does Krishna think now?
The palm of her hand eclipses the land-growing lotus.
The moons of her fingernails enchant and bewilder Krishna.
Now He is overcome. She bends the archer's bow of her eyebrows.
An arrow is fired. Now Krishna trembles.
Did kAmadeva's arrow strike Giridhara's head?
gobinda dAsa says: His heart is now licked by flames.

' Our Sacinandana is Nandanandana, Gopijanavallabha , Radha's nayaka and nagara , Syamasundara . He is full with all his opulences in Nadiya . He is thus the attractive pleasure abode for all the munis and devas . So all glories to his kantas, sweethearts, ho his effulgence and to his beautiful form . All glories to the mind-enchanting bhavas of his consorts , for he is auspiciousness personified for the Vraja tarunis' eyes and pleasure personified for the Nadiya nagaris .'

Wherever your restless graceful eyebrows are raised, that place becomes like the rising waves of the yamunA.

taMhi taMhi nIla utapala bana bhara-i

Wherever you cast restless glances from the corners of your eyes,
that place becomes like a forest of blue lotus flowers.

yaMhi yaMhi heriye madhurima hAsa
taMhi taMhi kunda kumuda parakAza

Wherever you gaze at me with sweet smiles,
that place becomes like a place filled with jasmine flowers and water-lilies.

gobinda dAsa kahe mugadhala kAna
cinalahiM rA-i cina-i nAhi jAna

Govinda dAsa says:
Charming kRSNa sees these comparisons. rAdhA does not.

He speaks not a word.

parasaGge kahalahi nAmahi tori

He chants Your name. His eyes glance at my face.

sundari ithe nAhi kaha Ana chanda
tahe anurata bhela zyAmara canda

O beautiful girl, do not say anything more. KRSNa glorious like a dark moon loves You.

yo-i nayana-bhaGgI nA sahe anaGga
so-i nayane srabe lora-taraGga

From the eyes that could not resist amorous crooked glances now flow waves of tears.

yo-i adhare sadA madhurima hAsa
so-i nIrasa bhela dIrgha nizwAsa

The lips that always held the sweetness of a smile now are filled with sad long sighs.

bidyApati kaha micha naha bhAti
gobinda-dAsa rahu tahi kRta sAthi

What vidyApati said was not a lie. Govinda dAsa says: O sakhI, please go to Him.

She casts her glances
as if unseeing,

she withholds her words.
Encompassed
by her lusty female companions,
she laughs without laughing
at my jokes.
As I behold this Beauty of Braj
I fail to see-
is she woman or child?
The rays of her eyes
keep her secret.

Krishna is so afflicted with love that even when He sees the moon He annoints His body with the cooling paste of sandalwood, the heat is intolerable...
He cannot wear a cape of white, so how is He to meet Her on this moonlit night?


sundari! to vinu Akula kAna
virahe kSINa tanu anukhana jara jara
jivaite vihi bhelo vAma



O Sundari! Krishna is in great distress without you! He is emaciated and in pain...Fate seems to be against Him and His survival...


jatamahi megha mallAra AlApai
timira payAna gati ase
Aoto jalada tatahi uDi jAoto
utapata digha nizAse


[center]If clouds appear and darken the night sky He will be able to meet with you,
so he begins to play His flute in the mallAra rAga which is said to make clouds appear...
The clouds appeared, but they were blown away by His deep sighs of separation from you.

bahu pulakAita dehA
govinda dAsa koho iha aparUpa naha
jAhA iha nava nava lehA


He is remaining alive by repeating Your name and talking about Your qualities while goosebumps of love decorate His body...
Govinda dasa says: "This is not so astonishing....such are the ways of ever-fresh loving affairs...
