Who Will Take Shyam? - Meera Bhajans

Satyabhama - Mon, 31 Jan 2005 18:56:29 +0530
Who will take Shyam?

[attachmentid=1253]

I saw witchcraft tonight in Vraj.
A wandering gopi came face to face with Shyam.
Sakhi, she is babbling now,
can no longer say "milk."
Come get Shyam, Shyam,
a pot full of Shyam!

In the overgrown lanes of Vrindavan
Shyam Manohar fixed His eye on this girl,
then departed.
Meera's Lord is hot, lovely and dark-
tonight she saw witchcraft in Vraj.

Now that was truly a pearl of wisdom. Satyabhama, you get a rascal like me wishing he had some sort of love for this Enchanting Lord of Ours.

I don't know about love... I heard Krishna is the kind that if you just look at Him and think "What an attractive young man!" or even "Hmm! Who'd have thought to wear a peacock feather like that?" He thinks you must be in love with Him, and then starts following you... just like He did to that gopi in the song... wub.gif

I've Bought Him!

[attachmentid=1257]

Sakhi, I went to the market and bought Shyam.
You claim at night, I claim by light of day.
Actually I was beating a drum while I bought him.
You say I paid too much; I say too little.
Actually, I put him on a scale before I bought him.
What I paid was my social body, my town body, my family body,
and all my inherited jewels.
Mirabai says: Shyam is my husband now.
Be with me when I lie down;
you promised me this in a former life.

O my friends,
What can you tell me of Love,
Whose pathways are filled with strangeness?
When you offer the Great One your love,
At the first step your body is crushed.
Next be ready to offer your head as his seat.
Be ready to orbit his lamp like a moth giving in to the flame,
To be like the deer as she runs toward the hunter's call,
Like the bird that swallows hot coals for love of the moon,
Like the fish that, kept from the sea, happily dies.
Like a bee trapped for life in the closing of the sweet flower.
Mira has offered herself to her Lord.
She says, the single Lotus will swallow you whole.

I do remember reading that somewhere, but I also heard that Meera had a sakhi who wrote down all her bhajans, and that her sakhi's name was "Lalita." Hmmm....

Then again, she merged with the deity in Dvaraka... oh geez... I guess I would just say Meera is Meera. tongue.gif

Shyam Won't Speak to Me!

[attachmentid=1262]

Sister, Shyam won't speak to me.
Why does this useless body keep breathing?
Another night gone
and no one's lifted my skirt.
He won't speak to me.
Years pass, not a gesture.
They told me
He'd come when the rains came,
but lightning pierces the clouds,
the night drags on
and I feel the old dread.
Meera is Shyam's dasi
Her whole life
is a long night of craving.

The Long Drought Is Over!

user posted image

My Beloved has come home with the rains,
And the fire of longing is doused.
Now is the time for singing, the time of union.
At the first thunderclap,
Even the peacocks open their tails with pleasure
and dance.
Giridhar is in my courtyard, and my wandering heart has returned.
Like a lilly blossoming under the full moon's light
I open to him in this rain: every pore of my body is cooled.
Mira's separation and torment are over.
He who comes to those who love
has remembered his promise.

There Is Nothing To Be Ashamed Of Now!

I am true to my Lord!
O sakhis, there is nothing to be ashamed of now
Since I have been seen dancing openly.

In the day I have no hunger
At night I am restless and cannot sleep.
Leaving these troubles behind, I go to the other side;
A hidden knowledge has taken hold of me.

My relations surround me like bees.
But Mira is the servant of her beloved Giridhar,
And she cares nothing that people mock her.

Giridhar Gopal alone is mine and no other!
On his head he wears the peacock-crown: He alone is my Husband.
Father, mother, brother, relative: I have none to call my own.
I've forsaken both God, and the family's honor: what should I do?
I've sat near the holy ones, and I've lost shame before the people.
I've torn my veil into shreds; now I wrap myself in a sheet.
I took off my finery of pearls and coral, and strung a garland of forest flowers.
With my tears, I watered the creeper of love that I planted.
Now the creeper has grown and spread all over, and borne the fruit of bliss.
The churner of the milk churned with great love.
When I took out the butter, no need to drink any buttermilk.
I came for the sake of loving devotion; seeing the world, I wept.
Mira is the maidservant of Giridhar:
now with love He takes me across to the further shore.

Satyabhamaji, I had heard a lot about Meerabai, both positive and negative. But now, thanks to you, I have seen some of her bhajans, and they are very sweet.

One "negative" comment I have heard was that she was intensly "greedy" to have Shyam for herself, while in our Gaudiya line we strive to become servants of the servants of Srimati Radhika.

To me, that is simply above my ability to process, so I'm not passing any "judgements" and just enjoying the sweet devotional poetry and divine sentiment as expressed by Meerabai.
Satyabhama - Tue, 08 Feb 2005 19:53:59 +0530
Greed is the hallmark of ravenous bhakti!

If your greed for Radha's lotus feet is not selfish, then neither is Meera's (or our) greed for Krishna's laugh.gif

If someone thinks being Radha's dasi is "selfless" then that would mean the joy to be had from being Her servant would be somehow lesser... thus, you would be "selfless" because you are "settling" while letting Her enjoy more.

In reality we know manjaris love Radha, and crave to share the bliss of her bhav! They are not "settling" at all, but that is the perfect expression of devotion for them. biggrin.gif

As for me... Mere to giridhar gopala, dusro na koi wink.gif

Dear Kulapavan ji,

Why necessarily drag mIrA into the gauDIya quagmire. Non gauDIyas do not necessarily consider "approaching zyAma directly as "breach of protocol".

no dragging was involved or implied smile.gif but I was actually replying to an earlier post, and since this site is frequented by Gaudiya Vaishnavas, some perspective seemed relevant.
Satyabhama - Tue, 08 Feb 2005 20:26:30 +0530
I think Meera's bhajans can be enjoyed by Gaudiyas as well as anyone else.

I also think that sambhogecchamayi devotion, though not "Rupanuga" in the common sense of the word, is certainly "Raaga" and as far as Gaudiyas go I don't see why Meera should be criticized for her Raag, which is totally spontaneous in its greed for Shyam. smile.gif Although I have heard such criticisms of "selfishness" in the past, I admit they don't make much sense to me in the context of Raganuga bhakti.

Satyabhama - Tue, 08 Feb 2005 20:49:59 +0530

I'll Be With Him In All His Gardens!

No one knows my invisible life.
Pain and madness for Rama.
Our wedding bed is high up in the gallows.
How can I meet him?
If the dark healer comes,
we'll negotiate the hurt.
I love Gopala-
My eyes are drunk,
worn out from making love with him.
We have become one, and I
am now his dark color.
People notice me, point fingers at me.
They see my desire,
since I'm stumbling about like a lunatic.
I'm wiped out, gone;
Yet no one knows I live with my Lord, Gopal.
The palace can't contain me- I leave it behind.
I couldn't care less about gossip
or my royal name.
I'll be with him in all his gardens.

The Only Cure!

[attachmentid=1276]

I am pale with longing for my beloved;
People believe I am ill.
Seizing on every possible pretext,
I try to meet him "by accident."

They have sent for a country doctor;
He grabs my arm and prods it;
How can he diagnose my pain?
It's in my heart that I am afflicted.

Go home, country doctor,
Don't address me by my name;
It's the name of God that has wounded me,
Don't force your medicines on me.

The sweetness of his lips is a pot of nectar,
That's the only cure for which I crave;
Mira's Lord is Giridhar Naagar.
He will feed me nectar again and again.

This Internet version seems not so nice, but the picture on the cover of the comic looks so nice I can't stop looking at it. And also within the comic, Krsna is painted with the most beautiful blue colour I have ever seen in my life. That particular shade of blue is very rare to see and it is the one I like most, so I always liked to read this comic as a child just to see Krsna in that blue colour. smile.gif

Krishna's Slave

[attachmentid=1277]

I go to the house of my one true lover, Giridhar
When I see his beauty, I only crave him more.
At dusk I go to him, at dawn I return.
Whatever his pleasure, day and night I am his.
The clothes he gives me, I wear; his food I eat-
Where he wants me to be, I stay.
If he wants to sell me, I want to be sold.
Mira says, My love for Giridhar has lasted through many births
Without him I can scarcely breathe!

She offers herself to him in all of her lives.

The Heat of Midnight Tears

LISTEN, SAKHI, this path is about opening your heart,
kissing His feet, resistance broken, tears all night.
If we could reach the Lord through bathing in bodies of water,
I would have asked to be born a fish in this life!
If we could reach Him through eating only fruits and nuts
Then surely the saints would have been monkeys
when they came from the womb.
If we could reach Him by eating only roots and leaves
Then the goats would surely reach Shyam before us!
If the worship of stone statues could bring us all the way,
I would have adored a granite mountain years ago.
Mirabai says: The heat of midnight tears will bring you to God.

My Only Refuge

[attachmentid=1283]

Without my beloved, the festival of Holi is bitter.
The village grieves, the fields grieve,
My bed is empty.
The abadoned one wanders. Absence falls on her like blows.
But hunting him one place after another
just fuels her fear.
Conquerer of Demons, come.
I've counted so many days alone my fingers bleed.
Oh, I hear the kartalas, the drums and flutes.
The plucked ektara sings.
Green spring has arrived. But my beloved has not,
and my pain grows deeper.
Why has Shyam forgotten his lover?
Giridhar, I stand before you, I ask you to lift this shame.
Mira says to her Lord, Return.
You are my only refuge, body and mind.
I have slept with no other, your virgin
from birth to birth.

other ornaments
Mira sees as mere glitter.
A mark on her forehead,
a bracelet, some prayer beads,
beyond that she wears only her conduct.

Oh Talasiga, just enjoy the ras! biggrin.gif

As Rumi says "He gives this wine to taste, not to talk about..."

Irony of ironies! When Rumi said that he talked and Meerabai talks of her ras in her lyric.

To engage with Meera is to appreciate. Spiritual life is not a television program and I am not a lounge lizard .....

You are correct of course! And I am quite sure from your descriptions that your Venugopaal is certainly not mine! wink.gif
But then again some girls like to share! smile.gif (That's Satyabhaamaa on Krishna's left tongue.gif )

This is again off-topic, but I was just thinking about Jagat-ji.

He once said a picture I posted of Krishna was "too muscly." tongue.gif I wonder what he would think of the big round laddu Krishna I just posted! tongue.gif blush.gif

Approve Me or Disapprove Me!

[attachmentid=1312]

The colors of the Dark One have penetrated Mira's body,
all the other colors washed out.
Making love with the Dark One and eating little,
those are my pearls and my carnelians.
A japa mala and the mark on my forehead,
those are my silks and my golden ornaments.
My teacher taught me this:
Approve me or disapprove me
I praise Giridhari night and day.

I take the old ecstatic path.
I don't steal money, I don't hurt anyone.
What will you charge me with?
I have felt the swaying of the elephant's shoulders;
And now you want me to climb on a jackass?
Try to be serious.

Thank you Satyabhama and especially for:
'I saw Witchcraft tonite in Vraj,' from page 1
'I am true to my Lord,' from page 2
and this last one.

p.s. 'too muscly' hahaha

Turn Back?

[attachmentid=1313]

This infamy is delicious!
Some revile me, others applaud,
I simply follow my incomprehensible road
A razor thin path
but you meet some good people,
A terrible path but you hear a true word
Turn back?
Because the wretched stare and see nothing?
O Mira's Lord is noble and dark,
and slanderers
rake only themselves over the coals

A Garland of Tears

[attachmentid=1386]

When the whole world
rests in slumber, dear love,
I keep vigil, riven from Him.
In a glorious palace of pleasure,
estranged, I sit awake,
and see a forsaken girl,
with a garland of tears on her neck,
passing the night
counting stars
counting the hours
to happiness.

Various nuances exist of the story of the meeting of MIra and JIVa GosvAmI, but one thing that I have heard is that she was considerably influenced by the GosvAmI.

This took the form of one of her padas where she laments the prospect of KRSNa taking sannyAsa, which is a clear reference to Sri Gaurasundar. Does anyone know of this pada and where I can find it with original words and translation?

St. Mirabai's pada, describing her encounter with Lord Krishna,
Who appeared as Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
She had broadcasted to the world her recognition of the Divinity
in the disguise of 'Sanyasi'!
This cherished song is melodiously sung by many famous Indian artists
and enjoyed by the devotees of Lord all over India and abroad.

ab to hari naam lou laagee, saadho!

saba jaga ko yaha maakhan choraa,
naam dharyo vairaagee! ..1..

kita chodi vohu mohan murali?
kita chodi saba gopi?
moond mundaayi dori kati bandhee,
maathe mohan topi ! ..2..

maata yasomati maakhan kaaran
baandhi jaaki paam,
shyaama kishore bhayo nava goraa,
caitanya jaako naam ! ..3..

pitaambar ko bhaava dikhaavai,
kati kaupeena kase,
gora krishna ki daasi meeraa,
rasanaa krishna base ! ..4..

ab to hari naam lou laagee!

Wow! w00t.gif

I was under the impression that MIra's pada contained veiled references of sorts, but it is so surprising to see that she is openly declaring her love for the Golden Lord. Ahhhhhh. smile.gif

WOW again! w00t.gif Thanks very much Anuraagji and dandavat pranams from me too.
