Rasa Purnima - Jai Radhe!

Jagat - Fri, 26 Nov 2004 10:43:57 +0530
The glorious Rasa is celebrated today. There are two rasa purnimas, but we'll take them both!

Does anyone have a recording of this padavali by Govinda Das, which I think is my absolute favorite of them all. I don't seem to have the whole thing. The translation really cannot do justice to the beautiful sounds of Govinda Das's alliteration. Hopelessly inadequate. Anyway.

zarada canda pavana manda,
vipine bharala kusuma gandha,
phulla-mallikA mAlatI yUthI,
matta-madhukara bhoraNI |

The soft breeze blows
while the full autumn moon glorifies the sky;
the forests are filled with the scents of various flowers;
the bees are maddened by the many
blossoming mallika, malati and yuthi flowers.

heraJ rAti aichana bhAti,
zyAma mohana madane mAti,
muralI gAna paJcama tAn,
kulavatI cita coraNI |

Seeing such a beautiful effulgent night,
Shyamasundara is overcome by feelings of romance
and begins to blow on his flute,
in the sweet key of the fifth note of the scale;
the thief of the faithful wives’ minds.

zunata gopI prema ropI,
manahi manahi ApanA soGpi |
tAhi calata yAhi bolata,
muralIka kala lolanI |

Hearing it, the gopis immediately fall in love with him
and mentally offer him their entire selves;
and they start on their way to meet him,
absorbed in the beautiful music of the flute.

I have a very old tape of Radharani Devi singing this pada. You can also substitute "udita" for "sArada" in the first verse, (according the book I've got here)

I heard this song one night in Navadvipa when the Samaja bari had arranged some lila kirtan on a boat, with lovely Akara's perhaps from Ramadas babaji.

A tape of Radharani Devi! I'd like to hear that. She was almost a neighbor in Nabadwip.
