Gaura Purnima Ki Jaya! -

Rasaraja dasa - Sat, 06 Mar 2004 09:41:32 +0530
Dandavats. All glories to the Vaisnavas.

Gaura Purnima is one of my favorite days of the year. I have also been very attracted to Gauranga and his beautiful past times. Sri Sri Gaura-Nityanander Daya is one of the more dear songs in my life. I still remember the first time I heard a recording of this beautiful song sung without instruments and it drew me into wanting to develop a deeper understanding of Mahaprabhu’s gift.

Sri Sri Gaura-Nityanander Daya

parama koruna, pahu dui jana
nitai gauracandra
saba avatara-sara shiromani
kevala ananda-kanda

bhajo bhajo bhai, caitanya nitai
sudrdha bishwasa kori
viishaya chadiya, se rase majiya,
mukhe bolo hari hari

dekho ore bhai, tri-bhuvane nai,
emona doyala data
pashu pakhi jhure, paishana vidare,
shuni’ janra guna-gatha

samsare majiya, rohili poriya,
se pade nahilo asha
apana karama, bhunjaye shamana,
kahoye locana-dasa

I would appreciate it if someone could give a direct translation of this song. I appreciate ACBSP’s summary on the song found in ISKCON songbooks but would like to know the exact translation.

I wish you all a beautiful Gaura Purnima. All glories to the Vaisnavas.

The most merciful two personalities,
Nitai and Gauracandra;
Of all avataras, the essence and crest-jewel,
Simply blissful they are!

Worship, O brother, Caitanya-Nitai,
Faithfully worship the two;
Reject sensuality, enter their mellows,
Make your lips chant Hari Hari!

Behold, O brother, in all the three worlds,
There's none as gracious as them;
Birds and beasts cry, stones are melting,
Hear of their qualities!

Entrapped in samsara, holding on tight,
Not grasping hold of their feet;
Embracing, enjoying results of his deeds,
Thus speaks Locana dasa.

I do not take any responsibility over the results of singing the English rendition.

I just finished the midday puja for Sri Giridhari about two hours ago. I think He likes this forum, at least most of the time. Here is some apple prasad for everyone to partake of:

You will have to use your imagination to relish the flavor, or do it in your siddha deha!

Funny that you should mention it, I just started translating Baba's tika on it. I hope I'll find the time to complete it tomorrow. The celebration continues.

O Advaita Gosain, husband of Sita Thakurani. Please be forgiving towards me, as with Your mercy I will attain Caitanya and Nityananda.

gaurA pahu nA bhajiyA goinu

I never worshipped Prabhu Gaura, and so I destroyed my chances of attaining the wealth of the jewels of prema.

I rejected the company of the saintly to play with the fallen, and so I am bound by the snare of karma.

Always consuming the poison of sense pleasures, I can never absorb myself in the bliss of Gaura's kirtana.

Why am I still living, and what happiness do I have? Narottama dasa wonders why he hasn't died.

Gaura Purnima is one of my favorite days of the year. I have also been very attracted to Gauranga and his beautiful past times.

Mine too, and me too! I have at least voiced similar sentiments in private to a number of different individuals. I wonder why though, and I also wonder what is this secret power that Gauranga has that He suddenly possesses our minds...

What is this attraction..?

Jivaji, nice verse! smile.gif

Yesterday we attended two adhivas-kirtans describing the preparations for the festival of Sri Gaurachandra. The first song sung depicted Gaura and his companions at Advaita Prabhu's house, the second described the great ananda-utsava at Jagannath Mishra's house. The first adhivas was at Tamal Tala, next to Mahaprabhu's baithak in a small mandir, and the second one in the Gaura-Nitai mandir. Today there will also be several kirtans, and tomorrow songs of the janma-lila are being sung. smile.gif

We just came in from two sweet sessions of Gaura's janma-lila-kirtan.

Now we are preparing the ingredients for the abhishek. For reference, the order in which the bath with panchamrita-ingredients are offered is as follows (as in Manohara-bhajana-dipika):

1. pAyaH-snAna (milk bath)
2. dadhi-snAna (yoghurt bath)
3. ghRta-snAna (ghee bath)
4. madhu-snAna (honey bath)
5. zarkarA-snAna (sugar-water bath)

This is followed by varuNa-snAna, the bath of the god of waters, which practically speaking is the part in which you bathe all the left-over ingredients off your Thakurji with water.

In India it's now about time for moon-rise (or a little after) and the earth is shaking with frantic kirtans and Gaurnam-sankirtan. Everyone has taken bath after Holi color throwing and all the fun and scare involved. Nice to be able to be there in mind at least... Jai Gaur Jai Nimai Jai Vishvambhar... jai everyone assembled in body, emotion or mind.

A double header today - Good Friday and Gaur Purnima on the same day. The difference is that the former is based on a solar calendar and the latter on a lunar calendar. Otherwise they would always fall on the same day. Religious holidays have traditionally been commemorations of past events on the anniversary of those events. The general concept is that in the march of time through cosmic cycles there are auspicious qualities to the days marked by coming full circle after those unique events. The two brightest objects in the sky are obviously the sun and moon, so it is only logical that the full circle of their cyclical behavior would be prominent. For us Caitanyaites the sun is significant theologically as being the abode of Narayana Himself. In the discipline of jyotish the sun represents the AtmA and the moon represents the mind. Our poetry compares Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to the moon, hence his nickname Gauracandra. Easter, which is the one day that gives Good Friday (commemorating the Crucifixion) its meaning as the day of the Resurrection is celebrated on a Sunday, whether you are following the solar calendar holiday of the Catholic and Protestant churches or the lunar calendar day of the orthodox churches, which in jyotish is ruled by the sun.

For the sAdhaka every day is sacred and there are daily rituals like arotik ceremonies and readings of sacred texts at specific times of day, as well as the daily activities of bhajan including sravanam, kirtanam and lila-smaranam. Still, days like today are even more sacred, for they help us to focus our attention on momentous events such as the appearance of Mahaprabhu. Having been raised in the Roman Catholic church and later getting initiated in the line of Sri Nityananda Prabhu, I am currently thinking of both the events depicted in CC and those depicted in the New Testament. That is an interesting juxtaposition, I think. Its a day to contemplate new beginnings that mark endings at the same time. Winter is coming to an end as evidenced by snow falling outside my window that will be melted by this afternoon. Weather forecasts predict very warm spring temperatures in just a few days.

If we are not physically situated in Nabadwip today, we can at least place ourselves there mentally. Right now I am mentally standing in Baba's temple there, the Radha-Vallabhajiu mandir, and taking darshan after taking a refreshing swim in the ganga nearby and reliving the time a holy man at that very spot twenty five years ago handed me a dried out Tulasi plant he pulled from the sandy banks from which I carved a magnificent set of large neck beads for myself.

Our Sacinandana is Nandanandana , Gopijanavallabha , Radha's nayaka and nagara , Syamasundara . He is full with all His opulences in Nadiya . He is thus the attractive pleasure abode for all the munis and devatas . So all glories to His kantas , sweethearts , to His effulgence and to his beautiful form . All glories to the mind-enchanting bhavas of his consorts , for He is auspiciousness personified for the Vraja tarunis' eyes and pleasure personified for the Nadiya nagaris .
